I once returned a product to Home Depot and the clerk was checking to make sure everything was in the box that was supposed to be. We chatted a bit and she mentioned that one scam was to buy liquid laundry detergent, pour out some, fill the container with water, and return it.

I bought a pint of grout sealer that even had a loss control tag on it.

There are plenty of small, pricey items that can be lifted, too.

Read the entire article. First off the entire story is about what HE said happened. There is no corroboration, one way or another, from the other employees that were supposedly involved. The other employee with him was not fired and Home Depot offered him his job back when they found out the whole story.
It also states that his shift was over, yet he made it a point to say he was back to the store in ten minutes. Also why did they wait a month to fire him. There's a lot of relevant information missing from this story.
Boycott first, facts second. Its the 'murican way.

Stores often fire you for trying to stop a robbery or shoplifter. You open them up to liability by acting. Otoh, they often accuse you of orchestrating the robbery so you don't ever win.

I find a company that would fire an employee under these circumstances heartless...Was the female employee also fired? I think this guy has a heck of a DOL case imo.

Home Depot sent a statement to NBC News that said, “We took a second look at this and decided to reverse our decision, based on the circumstances. We always do our diligence to make sure associates are treated fairly, which we’ve done in this case.”
In other words...

Home Depot sent a statement to NBC News that said, “We realized 'Holy crap, this is gonna be terrible PR!", so we pretended to give a rat's ass about the actual circumstances and reversed the decision."

Draw all 32 employees away from a store that covers ten square acres? For what? The world's biggest 2x4 and sheet rock heist?

It's not worth getting into a possible physical confrontation for low wages.

Agree with you but thinking about it, but there are some pretty pricy tools to be had in there... even so, seems like not the most lucrative target to hit.

For low wages? How about getting into a possible physical confrontation in order to prevent a child from being kidnapped, had a kidnapping actually been involved, which it wasn't? But Mr. Reagan acted in good faith believing that the child was being kidnapped.

Would you be willing to put your own life at risk in order to protect someone else? There are those who would, and there are those who wouldn't.

Too many potential legal issues today. You can end up in worse trouble than the perpetrator.

Like the school bus driver that saved a man in a burning car and lost his job.

He saw a man trapped in a burning car and pulled over... grabbed the bus fire extinguisher and rushed to the burning car and broke the window to pull the elderly driver to safety and put out the fire...

He was fired for dereliction of duty as he still had several kids on the bus when he stopped to helped... his duty was the kids in his charged not someone about to die on the side of the country road.
