Smoke here just north of Spokane, the Columbia Valley, just dropped temperatures at least five degrees. Nice lake weather. I'm off the Lake Windermere along with everyone else. The fire winds come from Banffffff along the great divide. For once, something coming from Alberta that has value!!!
Weather is funny. Here in TX where it's usually 100+ in August, we are having a cold spell where it's only in the 80's for at least the next 10 days.
Right and I am loving the heck out of it! I can't remember the last time we had it so good in August! Usually I find August and September in Texas to be brutal. It's practically balmy out there!
I was watching an indepth weather report yesterday and the reporter was talking about how hard it is to predict weather for this area this year because we are right in the middle of the dip in the jet stream, which makes for an unstable air mass and unpredictable rain and cloud cover.
Its not usually over 100 in Texas because the average high in a lot of Texas is in the mid 90s maybe upper 90's.
I think Rakin said "here" in Texas, implying that where HE is in Texas it is usually over 100 degrees in August. Not every day but it's not unusual.
It's that way here too (northeast Texas) when you factor in humidity and the heat index. 100 plus in August is very typical, even without the heat index factor thrown in. No, not every day, but we often have many days of temps over 100 in August.
Hate it for those who live in it, but I'm glad it's there and not here. Last year we were boiling in heat that didn't let up until almost November. This year it has been below average - so a nice change!
Humidity, whether Dixie, downtown Chicago, or Calcutta is the real killer. We don't have humidity in the NW to speak of. We get a little of that brutal micro-wave heat in July or August at higher elevations. I'm at almost 3,000 feet, but without all that LA smog to block the ozone layer. Pass the sunscreen.

The southeast has been enjoying a very nice summer this year. Much cooler than usual.

The fires here in the pnw-western states will mean that a tremendous amount of CO2 will be added.
The soot will be pushed over the Rockies and decrease the sunlight east of the Rockies and become nucluei for moisture to form as rain or high clouds.
Lot of the fires are in areas of fairly high altitudes.
Air quality is Not as bad as China/india.
It's just been a crazy year in general in the northwest. They only had 3 days of sunlight between October and May, and one of the harsher winters on record. The entire city is covered in smoke right now. There's a heat wave that just won't move. They haven't had rain in like 40 days or some such craziness, so their local area is basically kindling waiting to ignite.
