Powerball rolled over last night to $307,000,000. First time both have simultaneously been over 300. Just FYI.

I hope both keep rolling.

This was the first I had heard of a price change. The good news is that odds for winning the 2nd prize of a million bucks got better.

Following are the changes to MegaMillions, which go into effect Oct. 31
  • Ticket price will increase from $1 to $2.
  • Players will pick five numbers from 1 to 70 in the first set of numbers, instead of 1 to 75.
  • Players will pick one number from 1 to 25 in the second set of numbers, instead of 1 to 15.
  • Chances of winning the jackpot will decrease from 1 in 258.9 million to 1 in 302.6 million, while the chance of winning any prize -- which will run from $2 to the jackpot -- will go from 1 in 14.7 to 1 in 24.
  • The odds of winning the second-place $1 million prize will get better - from 1 in 18.5 million to 1 in 12.6 million.
  • Non-jackpot prize payouts will change. Third prize will increase from $5,000 to $10,000. Fifth prize will increase from $50 to $200. Sixth and seventh prizes will increase from $5 to $10. Eighth prize will increase from $2 to $4 and ninth prize will increase from $1 to $2.

Jack was a rich guy before he won! His life went to $h!T quickly after the win though....

Plus State income tax. Not to mention all the Sales & Use tax on everything you spend.

I was in Toronto when their national lottery hit 50 million (huge for them, many rollovers). Interesting enough that the jackpot there is not taxable but as a US citizen it would be taxable to me. So for just shy of 20 million dollars extra would it be worth it to denounce your citizenship?

For me.......yeah!

One of my mom's friends won $10 Million in the Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes. This was probably 25 years ago.

I met a lottery winner about 10 years ago at a friend's wedding. The lottery winner hit it big in the lottery about 15 years ago (don't know the exact amount but enough to not work anymore).

Here is what happened to him according to my friend who is good friends with the guy:
-The guy was in his 20's when he won and he was living in Las Vegas at the time;
-He initially took "annual payments" and began partying like a rock star: booze, women, strip clubs, etc.
-Three years into this he woke up one day and realized he was going to be another chump lottery winner who blew all his money
-So he arranged to get a lump sum payment for the remaining amount. He used this cash to invest in an office building in Phoenix, Arizona. Slowly but surely he built a real estate portfolio with his cash flow.
-Last I heard he was happily married and still living in Las Vegas.

Not calling you out but Las Vegas has never had a lottery (even to this day).

Taking the lump sum buyout from a 3rd party(aka JC Wentworth) literally gets you pennies on the dollar.

Living in Vegas does not mean he got the ticket in Nevada, He could have purchased a ticket when he was out of state for some reason.

Many Lotteries give you the option to change from Annual payment to Lump Sum in the first few years after you won.
