This is a bad one and more will be found dead as they start their process of clearing the damage. It's sad.

Some of the videos of buildings collapsing just took my breath away. There are several here:

Shocking Images of Earthquake Coming Out of Mexico

And now the sad news that at least 21 children died when a school collapsed, with 30 still missing at the same school.

The entire earthquake-prone Pacific rim should be sitting on pins and needles, from Alaska to Chile, from Japan to Singapore!

It can happen anywhere, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada. Alaska had the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere back in 1964, a whopper 9.2 quake, with a tsunami sending 40 foot waves crashing into the shoreline. Here, in Las Vegas, predictions are the strongest magnitude quake we could experience would be a 6.8. But who are they to say!!

Seattle had a 7.1 15 years ago, yet the only major damage was the dome of the Capital in Tacoma.

And, yes, it can happen elsewhere, even inland. Recall the quake that struck near Washington DC not too long ago, and they had to restore the damaged Lincoln Memorial.

I think the damage was minimal in comparison to the population and building density.

Arrow Yet ANOTHER earthquake hits Japan!

Quote:
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the northeast coast of Japan, just 200 miles east of the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The earthquake occurred just before noon EDT on Wednesday (the middle of the night in Japan), and was about six miles deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Its epicenter was near that of the huge 2011 earthquake that led to a tsunami and caused a nuclear meltdown in Japan. The USGS also estimated that most people in its vicinity felt “weak” shaking. The closest city was Kamaishi, 175 miles away.

What on Earth for?

This earthquake happened 1600 miles SE of Los Angeles. That would be like people in Nebraska 'on pins and needles' because of a tornado in Florida. The quake occurred on an intraplate fault that has nothing whatsoever to do with the San Andreas transform fault, or with any other fault in California. Even the larger earthquake in Chiapas earlier in the month was unrelated - that one occurred on a subduction zone.

Earthquakes aren't contagious.
