Ohio calls off execution after failing to find inmate's vein - Sun Sentinel

Ohio called off the execution of an ailing 69-year-old killer Wednesday after the executioners couldn't find a vein to insert the IV that delivers the lethal drugs.

It was only the third time in modern U.S. history that an execution attempt was halted after the process had begun.

Alva Campbell, condemned to die for killing a teenager during a carjacking two decades ago, was promptly given a new execution date by Republican Gov. John Kasich that is a year and a half away.

The execution team worked for about 25 minutes to find a vein in Campbell's arms or his right lower leg as he lay on a gurney in the death chamber. Team members used a locating device with an ultraviolet light while comforting Campbell by patting him on the arm and shoulder.

Bullets and electricity can get the job done just fine if they can't find a vein.

I wonder why it is postponed for another year and a half. I also wonder why we are still using this method. It seems like a gas chamber or a firing squad would be better.

Three hots and a cot for a two time murderer? I can think of better ways to spend money.

This is an example of when the death penalty is opposed by many people-- 70 yr old man in failing health, a physician warned attempting to execute him would be ill advised.. in glad and relieved and hopes his attorneys are able to have his future dp date commuted.

Being old and frail should negate the sentence he received? He was't old and frail when he committed said crime.

This dp case is the example that would help he anti- dp crowds cause.... I can agree or accept the dp for a person who tortures a child, or kidnaps and assaults and kills their gf or spouse, etc but this type of case, no. And it's kind of a public embarrassment to the pro dp crowd when a doctor said it's not advised to do so, and they're using all their effort and cost of just wasting time doing something stupid and pointless-- at this point he's 70 and in failing health... save it for people like Aguirre
