I agree with you though.

I think our rail system is a disgrace compared to some other developed countries.

Local Washington mayor feared deadly accidents weeks before Amtrak derailment | Fox News

' “Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements, or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens,” ' Anderson said.

"Anderson also advocated for grade separations, including overpasses, to keep trains sufficiently separated from pedestrians and cars."

The new route was going to reduce travel time by 10 minutes. For $181 million.

The mayor only expressed concern about vehicles at grade crossings...........not the track structure.

Much of the track is supposed rated at 80 mph after they did a $181 million upgrade of the tracks over the last few years. The tracks in that curve were brand new, but that doesn't help the fact there's no way a train weighing a ridiculous amount, will never be able to hold that curve going 80 mph, the forces would be too great.

Depends on what degree of curve it is..........

Of course, and if the turn is "banked" like a NASCAR track , but the fact remains the posted limit of that curve was 30 mph, so it must have been quite a curve since the track just north of it is pretty straight, with speeds up to 80 mph.

With a 30 mph limit the train "might" have made it through there at 40 mph, but no way it was making it through a 30 mph curve going 80 mph.

Physics don't lie!

I wanna know the names of the numb-nuts that disregarded the Lakewood city officials very valid concerns and how they "spun" them to meet their selfish goals (by disregarding valid points to consider).

It will be interesting to see the excuses that come up once an answer has been found for the cause of this unnecessary tragedy. I am sure money plays a big role in this, as there should have been a "speed detector" of sorts monitoring the speed, as mentioned in the story I read this morning. There wasn't.

I wonder if the speed limit is permanent due to the degree of the curve........or temporary due to the recent maintenance.

I would say permanent, if you look at Google Maps at the I-5 crossing, it's actually an "S" curve, with another curve once they clear I-5 northbound.

If you wanted to make that curve "faster", I would have extended the line past the current bridge along I-5 southbound then to a more subtle curve across I-5 into where the old line meets up, but that would have added to the already $181 million price tag, because you would have to build a whole new bridge and ROW for the track.
