"From 5:51 p.m. to 7:53 p.m., the same play symbol was repeated in all nine available play areas on tickets which would result in a top prize of $500. No more than five identical play symbols should appear for a single play," the lottery said.

The only thing these people should get back was the money they spent on the tickets themselves.

If an ATM gives you $1,000 instead of the $20 you requested, do you think you are entitled to that $1,000?

My favorite line from this is the woman who is upset because she had been promising to take her kids to Disney but couldn't afford it but now she finally could! Until her hopes were crushed.

Maybe if she didn't play the lottery every day she'd have taken them to Disney multiple times by now.
Depends on her purchases. They didn't mention she was buying everyday. Tickets cost $2-$10 so if she's playing say $10 a week, that's $520 a year. Airfare for the family would easily be double that. Then rooms, three day passes.....Food and transportation....Dude, it's 2017, not the 1970's

Oh, please, what a stretch. That's not even close to this incident.

Not sure why it's so hard to believe that people think they could benefit from an obvious computer glitch. It happens. Exhibit A: Sale of the Year? Delta to honor mistake fares

The point that you have a hard time grasping is that malfunctions do not entitle you to anything. These people are not entitled to the winnings, period. It has been proven that this was a malfunction. Too bad so sad, time to move on.

What a downer to think you won, only to have it snatched away.
I buy about four tickets a year.

I am infrequent player myself. A couple tickets a year. Imagine my surprise when I was at the store just a few days ago and decided to buy lottery ticket for $1.

justanokie: I'll take a megamillions ticket also (as I slide a single dollar across the table)

clerk: (walks over punches out a ticket, walks back to register and sees my dollar) That will be $2.

justanokie: Naw I don't want the extra play whatever its called. Just a regular ticket.

clerk: Yes, thats $2. The price went up 3 months ago to $2 the megaplay (or whatever) is extra.

so its not just a dollar to play anymore I suppose.

I agree. I have never understood legality of "Oops sorry, it was a mistake. We are not going to pay." If they print a winning ticket, then they need to pay the winner. If that is a hardship for the Lottery, then they need to invest in better software that doesn't allow that type of thing to happen. The same for casinos and slot machines. It's not like with the millions of dollars they rake in, they can't afford better software.

other games are $1 but the big lotteries are $2.....

Similar thing happened last week, clerk added "multiplier" so it cost me $5 extra. I mentioned that wasn't what I wanted BUT at the same time bought the ticket. Turns out I got 3 numbers, multiplier was 4 so instead of winning $10 I won $40! $5 extra cost got me 30 extra dollars! If I didn't have the multiplier I would have simply broken even!
