A child dies sledding down a driveway into street. So where were the parent(s)?

A juvenile generally can be unattended playing outside so I’m not sure the parent question is needed unless this juvenile was really young.

I found in another article the child was 9, I think that’s still old enough to be outside unattended in most cases

We had a kid here today go sledding and wind up in a partially frozen lake. Luckily he was pulled out pretty quickly.

Schools were closed and the child was 12. At 12 one would expect some common sense to not sled down a driveway into the street. Being attended to is not the issue. Attention to where the child was is the issue. If the schools are closed and it's 27 outside, the child should not have been outside.

Yes indeed. Parents can't seem to catch a break these days. A kid gets injured (or worse), and the first response is "where were the parents". On the other side of the coin, you have "over-zealous helicopter parents" that "never let their kids be kids". Hopefully most parents are somewhere in between, and despite their best efforts, accidents are going to happen. But it always has to be someone's fault, whether it could have been prevented, or not. Because pointing fingers is what we do.
Sorry this incident ended in tragedy, but I'm reluctant to automatically blame the parents.

Why not? Was the child not dressed properly?

That's not necessarily fair, though, since a driver is generally looking out for other vehicles and pedestrians, and in this case perhaps road hazards from a winter storm--a kid shooting down the end of a driveway into the street at a high rate of speed would be less visible and more unexpected.

When my dad was teaching me how to drive he told me to always look out if a ball or a bike rolled out into the road, because 9 times out of 10 it would be followed by a kid more concerned with the toy than with safety. It's a good rule of thumb, but it's not infallible, and accidents still happen.

I was playing outside by myself when I was younger than this girl.
