She didn't look combative. She didn't look like she understood much and was terrified. He asked her to sit down and she ended up doing that without putting up a fuss about it. Hospital will probably never say why they really did it.
How long ago did you retire? I don't think that a sandwich thing would fly in her situation. She wasn't combative at all in that video.
You think people are tripping over that video, imagine the reaction to smashing a human between 2 mattresses.
I haven't retired. Would you have someone running amok going into patient rooms and attacking other patients and staff?
I am wondering why did three security personel take this woman outside instead of one? I too would like to hear the full story.
There are postings with links on a few medical/nursing forums where at least one doctor explains what happened.
Apparently the woman was "asked" to get dressed (with assistance from nurses if she wished), and refused. You can see clearly she does have her clothing in a bag from video.
The woman also (supposedly) refused offers to be taken to various shelters or any where else.
We shall likely never get the full story because of privacy rules. Unless the patient themselves or as part of a legal proceeding makes the hospital records public what happened cannot be discussed.

Well she was a big woman....
One or more to do the actual escorting off the premises. Then at least two for ensuring no harm came to anyone in the process.
I have to tell you? If the patient was being "combative" or uncooperative do you think she was going to just sashay out the door of her own free will. Suppose she attacked other patients or staff on her way out the door? Maybe grabbed the first object could lay hands upon and began dishing out beat downs.

If someone put you out in the cold with nothing much on but your undergarments, you'd simmer down soon enough as well.
Mental issues such as what this woman seems to suffer tend to occur in episodes, especially with schizophrenia. You can be talking to a perfectly normal person one second, then it's as if a switch went off and a second later you've got a totally different person.
Like hellob and NurseBishop I also have worked with the homeless except at the front end, as a paramedic.
This is a tragic and I think we can all agree this shouldn't have happened. Somewhere someone screwed up.
This video generates a lot of emotion and calls for change, investigations, firings, government help etc.
That said I wanted to add some context. Unless you directly work with this population you have no idea how huge it really is. It is a very big crack that these folks fall through-and there are a lot of people in that crack.
This video shows two minutes in this woman's life. She didn't get there overnight.
In my junior medic days I was appalled at the conditions some folks were living in. Not only the homeless, but those with a some form of deplorable shelter, living in their car etc. Where are the families? Why aren't they helping? As my exposure to this population expanded I came to realize a few things:
-Some simply do not have families.
-Some families abandoned them. The emotional and financial toll it takes is draining and they simply had enough.
-Many don't want help, or they only want limited help. Like hellob said they know what to say and do to get what they want. They play the system because they have been in it for so long.
-They are experts at maintaining the lifestyle they want, not what other people think they should have.
The above doesn't apply to everyone of course. There are some who want help and accept it, but there are plenty of others who don't and reject it. You can't force someone to conform to your norms.
This has been going on since the beginning of time. When in our history have there not been homeless/mentally ill? We go through winter every year. These folks are more visible now because of technology/internet.
You could throw the entire defense budget at this problem and I doubt it would be enough.
