Well I hope the press follows this story. Maybe they’ll just resell this new boat, take the money and disappear.

If I read that story correctly, part of the deal is that he'll teach them to sail. Which is marginally better than the first attempt, but still - very good odds this will end up with a helicopter ride. Bluewater sailing is something you work up to over years of building experience. Stuff will break, weather will get bad, people will get hurt or sick, fatigue will lead to bad decisions. Most capable people can handle each of those issues separately, but it takes skill and knowledge and experience to tackle them all at once.

Nah. Sailboats are generally pretty forgiving. They could be star crossed but I would think the odds they do well is good. Given a couple of years and they will hit the lecture circuit. Maybe some You-tubes in the interim.

This actually makes a lot more sense than trying to sail the new boat without any instruction or depth-sounder. Well, it probably comes with the equipment.

Meh, depth-sounders are overrated for collision avoidance. Once they see an obstacle, you're on top of it. (For shifting shoals and banks, OK. And they can alert those who forgot to check the tide table...) Updated charts and situational awareness and GPS.

Why bother? When the "new" POS sinks all they'll have to do is set up another GFM account and start cyber--begging again. They might just be onto something here! Hmmmmm! I wonder how long it would take for me to beg up enough money to get a 60ft sportfisherman?????

Let's not go overboard, if you'll pardon the expression. A well-maintained 1986 boat (provided it's of a suitable type) can be sailed around the world - if you know what you're doing and have planned well.
