The parents obviously lacked empathy. I think they viewed their children as things/possessions, not as human beings with rights. The parents’ focus was on behavior/obedience, not thoughts. I don’t think they cared what the children thought so probably didn’t “waste” time reading their journals, except initially. The parents weren’t expecting to be found out by authorities. My guess some of the children were tied up, not because they had tried to escape, but as punishment for some sort of behavior the parents didn’t like.
I tend to think of their actions as evil. But I suspect that Louise married so young that she had not formed her herself fully. We also have heard that she experienced sexual abuse.
She was a child having children. I suspect she was overwhelmed by the needs of her children, of keeping a house, of doing what her husband demanded. I think she was poorly served by her father who did not insist she come home after she ran away. I do see her as a victim, but I do not condone the treatment she participated in regarding the kids.
I am totally aghast at their treatment, and cannot understand how the parents’ minds worked during those years of abuse.
There is some evidence that Louise was living a kind of fantasy life.
But there is much we do not know. I just hope for the best for the kids.
Exclusive: Siblings allegedly held captive said to experience freedom for 1st time
The newly freed siblings -- who are now adults -- were discretely whisked away Thursday from the Corona Regional Medical Center, where they had been nursed back to health after police rescued them in January. After being described as on the brink of starvation, the survivors were taught the basics about a world police say they never quite experienced.
But now, the young adults, ages 18 to 29, were taken by their attorney and public guardian from the carefully controlled ward of the hospital to an undisclosed rural house they now call home.
Now, the seven siblings who are free have enjoyed getting relative privacy for the first time in their lives -– including receiving their own bedding and having their own closet space, Osborn said.
In their first 24 hours since their release from the hospital, the older siblings picked citrus for the first time. They also made their first ice cream sundaes and prepared Mexican food, apparently all firsts, Osborn added.
“They pretty much love any food that is fresh. They love fruit, pasta and soup,” said Osborn.
Beyond tasting new food, the siblings spend their time doing various kinds of occupational, physical and psychological therapy. They also watch movies. A lot of them.
Osborn believes they didn’t have much access to movies despite their parents’ trove of thousands of DVDs. The siblings' favorite movies so far have been anything associated with the "Star Wars" series.
The video says the 17 year old was only on social media for a few weeks and someone told her that what was going on at her house was wrong. Thank goodness for an internet hero.

It makes sense. It answers the question, why after so many years, did she do it at that moment.
I'm not sure watching "a LOT" of movies is a great thing, at all, but having access to good fresh food is certainly positive.
If I were in charge of their rehab, I think I'd try to have them get used to being out in public and experiencing different social settings. The grocery store, hiking, museums, restaurants. Movies maybe not so much.
Well, this would have been very interesting to see if they had actually gone through with it (from an article dated Jan 24, 2018).They would NEVER have been able to pull this off unless they hired people to come in and show them how 'normal' families actually live. These psychopath and vulgar 'parents' truly make me sick.
Louise Turpin's brother Billy Lambert has even told various media outlets that his sister talked of having her large family on a reality show.
"She thought the world would be fascinated by their lives," Lambert told Britain's Sunday People.
"Is this just to try to display a sense that 'things are normal?...If we show a little of something maybe people won't question us,'" said Dr. Karen Imagawa, director of the Audrey Hepburn Cares Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, who works with children who have suffered abuse and trauma. "Or maybe there's a deeper psychological motivation that they're sort of trying to manipulate to see what they can get away with and almost flaunting it out there with the hope that no one is going to know what is really going on there."
So much to do for them. I hope that there is a trusted social worker nearby for them. They need to learn to shop, drive, and they need to be enrolled in community college to start to make up for all the education that they were deprived of. I also hope that the younger ones will be able to visit with them soon, and frequently, and join them as they get older. Certainly, the 17 year old who escaped should be able to join them very soon.
I hope that the media stays far, far away from them.

The media is biding their time. You know they must be chomping at the bit to get in on this, particularly with the 17 year old who was savvy enough to post videos of herself singing on youtube and to escape the home. She will be the prime target of course.

The only way we can help prevent that sort of exploitation is by boycotting products and refusing to click links.
