The biggest thing that scares me about tech like this is the AI must be programmed for all scenarios. What if a car sees a child playing in it's path but the only other way to avoid them has 2 people chatting. Someone has to program this car to decide who to hit. That's a bit scary.

That's assuming that it's even possible to do that. If you look back through history to some of the man-made disasters that have occurred, many of them are caused by that 1 in 1,000 scenario that wasn't thought of, and designed for. I'm skeptical that one person, or even a group of people, can possibly think of every situation that might arise and program for it. And you can bet that eventually that unforeseen scenario will rear it's ugly head.

Cars will always get into accidents regardless of who is behind the wheel.

You refine the technology as best you can but nothing is perfect. Pehaps we Americans should fix our current bridges and outdated infrastructure/roads before we rush into self-driving.

Not enough facts. If she just walked out in front of the car at the last instant, she would have been hit driver or not. If anything, her odds were better with a computer than a human in terms of reflex actions. There are other factors such as visibility, weather, time of day. There was a safety driver in the car. Why did he/she not stop?

It could be a mechanical, electronic, programming error but my initial guess is pedestrian stupidity and not looking before crossing the street.

What total BS story. The real story. The car hit a bicyclist, not a pedestrian. Here is the picture to prove it.

Self-driving Uber car hits, kills pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona crash - ABC15 Arizona

Your link is to a story that says a pedestrian was hit.

It looks like ABC15 changed the story after they found out what actually happened.

This is going to be a big black eye for the technology, but in order to advance technology, there will be problems.

These things needs to be stopped. Why the hell are companies trying do make these self driving cars??I'm not surprised this happened. It's all about money with these companies and not about a person's safety.Also..I thought that they have shown that with these self-driving cars...there is still someone behind the wheel at all times still...so what was that person doing when this happened???This world is just going to get worse...
