An Oklahoma jury has awarded $25.5 million to the family of a cancer patient denied coverage by Aetna, with jurors saying that the insurer acted "recklessly" and that the verdict was meant as a message for Aetna to change its ways.

Aetna won’t end up paying that either but either way what does that have to do with the story?

Cunningham had another encounter in court. He said Shely, Aetna's lead attorney, walked up to him and congratulated him after the verdict before telling him he'd lose on appeals.
This is a crap move by the attorney

Oh, no...

Not that...

Aetna covers 39 million people. Even if your notion that Aetna is going to run out and increase its premiums enough to cover this judgment (hint - that's not how it works), that would amount to an extra cost of... 64 cents per customer for a year. Or, barely five cents per monthly premium.

How many people do you think would to have to drop their coverage because they just can't scrape together another nickel each month?

I agree.

You know, some posters will excuse big business doing almost anything.

But I also have to say, that I'm under an Aetna policy through my former employer, and it's best health insurance I've ever had.

Does this mean a judgment should never be awarded against a corporation because "all their customers will simply end up paying"?

How on earth would we ever stop corporate misconduct?

Finally, should someone who is a victim not be compensated because of our fear that "the customers will have to pay"?

Will they actually pay or tie this up in appeals until the family is broke or gives up?

Well, if they just pass the cost on to their customers, where is the punishment in that? How is that an actual punishment for them?

That’s just not how things work and even if it did there’s no other option for carrying out this punishment
