My 92-year-old aunt lost her house in the Paradise fire, and so did her daughter, plus they lost the house her other daughter, who died recently, lived in but which they hadn't put on the market yet. The town was a retirement haven; that's why so many of the missing people are elderly. The population skewed that way.

Metlakatla is right. Paradise was more a retirement community compared to say, Chico, which is a college town.

I know, it's just words, but, it's also an example of how the media tries to 'make news' when there isn't any.
It is the word most people would use. All those lists of names on bulletin boards here and after 911 said Missing not Unaccounted for. The Facebook pages say Missing not Unaccounted for. The media doesn't make bulletin boards. The police use the term missing.
