A coworker just moved from Anchorage to Tacoma about a month ago. I asked him if he heard about it this morning and he had all knids of texts from family. He got some pics of a torn up highway. I guess the infrastructure got hit pretty hard.

My mother lives on the north side of Anchorage. I haven't been able to get a hold of her yet. Calls go straight to VM.

It's gonna be a long night...

My brother in Fairbanks said parts of it could be felt there. He thinks some of the cell towers may have been damaged because he cannot call out. He was somehow able to message my sister otherwise.

News anchors and officials are requesting people attempt contact via text, not voice to ease line congestion. No reports of serious injury, no fatalities, just infrastructure damage. A couple thousand without power during the day but apparently the number is down to a couple hundred now depending on where you are. Worse damage to one or two of the multiple electric utilities. I think the city is recommending boiling drinking water though there are no confirmed contaminations.

I wish you and your mother the best of luck. Please let us know when you reach her.

I read something earlier to that effect, they were saying earthquakes have really picked up in the region.

I truly hope this area does not get the 'big one' in my lifetime...such an event would impact the entire country in ways would not even imagine!

Yellowstone is also a big concern up there!

Good luck and speedy recovery to all affected by this natural tragedy.

Glad I'm in Florida where I would take a hurricane over an earthquake any day!

That's a big one. We had our big one---7.8 back in April, 2016. Lots of damage in the poorer towns that still have not recovered. We are good though. I hope for awhile.

Damn. I was seriously considering moving there, but had no idea they get 7.0! I was under impression it's 5.5 - 6.0....

What's the best source on historical data of earth quakes? Probably USGS site?

A subduction zone lies just off the Alaskan coast. Remember the Indian Ocean tsunami that killed a quarter million people? That was the product of a subduction zone earthquake.

The Good Friday Earthquake was a 9.2.

Anchorage then:
