I have to check my email from my school - I'm a senior in college, and the nearest desktop computer is often hundreds of feet away. I suppose if the year ran from, say, June 2019 to June 2020 (after graduation) I might could do it.

I use my phone for a handful of things to keep me organised. Calendar and email (for emergencies) is all I need.

But my willpower is terrible.

So I uninstalled every social media application, and anything else I could remove.

Then I used a "grayscale" mode in my Android phone. It makes the phone perfectly useable but the bright colors no longer manipulate me into staying in apps for longer.

I'm not qualified for this contest as I refuse to buy one! There's no space left in my life for one more addiction!

You can but they said they would supply a phone where you could do make phone calls and text. I think the whole point in giving up the Smartphone means giving up all you can do with one like going on the Internet and all you can do there. That’s what people are addicted to, not the phones themselves or the basic functions.

No downloads of games or music either.

Could easily. I've never owned a Smartphone and I'm 35 years old.

The catch is you have to have something to lose.

The one who gets to participate will be a Gen Zer most likely with a large instagram following. Otherwise it won't be news worthy.

Of course they aren't going to pick Joe the 65 year old retired construction worker. Nobody is going to find that entertaining. At the end of the day these sweepstakes and competitions are all about earned media and free marketing dollars.
