American's travel...alot, so part of that is just the numbers game where Americans just happen to be a high proportion of the tourists. But my experience has been with a lot of rude non-Americans.

Here are some surveys where American's are surpassed by other nationalities. Don't worry US are still on this list:

BBC NEWS | Europe | 'Rude' French are worst tourists

However, we also have survey's where Americans are the BEST tourists (in the top 10):

And you have a problem with that? Strange when that seems to be the accepted cornerstone of American foreign policy today.

Go figure.

No. it's the opposite. We can mock Kim Jong Il or Osama bin Laden, but Korean-Amrticans or Arab-Americans are a protected class.

I've never understood how the French make the "rude" list. Everyone I met there was incredibly nice and helpful.

This one is not a "survey", it is the writers personal observations coupled with a few anecdodes from the tabloid media.

This is a false stereotype. Americans are not hated travelers, they are generally considered friendly and generous in other countries and welcomed as visitors despite our often shaky political reputation.

You want hated travelers just wait for the next pack of shouting Chinese to roll down the street.

This. Whenever I see someone bring out the "Americans are hated tourists" cliche it's like a huge sign in the air saying someone is repeating something they've heard and doesn't actually get out much.

Right. I am rarely an apologist for anything American, but I have traveled a lot, dating back to the notorious Ugly American imagery, and I have seen no preponderance of evidence that Americans are any worse travelers than any other. Then or now.
