Geez, the practice of locking animals like this up in cages, so people can come gawk at them, should have died off with circus freak shows and other such things of the past!
Zoos do not exist just so people can gawk at animals, wild rhinos have been killed at a rate they will be extinct outside of zoos, which also applies to many species such as Bengal tigers, pandas, elephants, etc. They also provide education regarding animals and conservation.
My birds were born in captivity and have very happy lives. My African Senegal flew through old screen one time and was so happy when I found him. He couldn't run fast enough to me and climb up on me. He stuck around the vicinity and kept calling "Mommy! Mommy!" You think that is an unhappy bird????

Go extinct... why? Is that because of men hunting and killing them? If so, and that's what you believe, pursue those who kill them and profit off the body parts. Start a Cause to end the slaughter.
Or do they go extinct because of nature and natural selection? If yes, then let them die.
The human race is an arrogant species. Trust me, the animals would be better off without our interference.

Honest question: What is your take on safaris? They are generally made to mimic the animals' natural habitat, all while providing a secure environment away from poachers and the like. The animals there live as they would in the wild.
As for pursuing the people who kill them, there are countless "causes" to end the slaughter. The problem is, government corruption in those countries cannot be controlled by us. We can't just go there and tell them to stop their practices.
ID like to see some journalist or media outlet do a piece on how zoos obtained the animals they have on display, maybe that would be enough to disgust majority of people?
A majority of animals you see at the zoo were born in captivity. Others were injured in the wild, or for some other reason woupd not have survived the wild. Why would anyone be disgusted by that?
The 2 grizzly bear at the local zoo came from Montana. Their mother was killed, and without human intervention, they would have died without their mother. The polar bear was orphaned as a cub after his mother was accidently shot by a hunter. He was originally taken in by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. They then worked with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Polar Bear Species Survival Plan to find a permanent home for the orphaned bear.
No investigative journalism is needed. Zoos are very up front with were their animals came from. There is nothing disturbing or shocking about it.

I can't honestly answer this because I've never been on a safari.
No, we can't tell other countries what to do. Killing is profitable for the poachers. But it has nothing to do with why we really have zoos.
Oncjgirl made it sound like we build zoos to spare the poor animals from the poachers. If zoos weren't profitable we wouldn't have any in America. And if she really believed that she would find a way to fight to end poaching. That was my only point there.

Except no, it's not true.
Life span is not the point. These animals are kept in the equivalent of jail cells under the control of arrogant profit driven humans their whole lives. Id much rather be dead than be an animal caged in a zoo but they dont have that option so they must endure it.
I’m a bit doubtful that this is the kind of zoo experience that we should have. I understand that people want to be up close to animals, but rhinos are not petting zoo animals.
