I can't front, stories like this make me mad. I mean I get the reason for the policy but jeez the guy is working security, I can certainly see why he felt the need to help.
They persist because most people have no idea where to buy "tech" stuff.
Terrible retailer in almost every respect.
I actually thought they were gone but, from my own experiences with them years ago, I agree they were one of the worse brick & mortar electronic stores I had ever encountered.
I will say that it makes this case a little more difficult than most. Not only is a store employee expected to be passive when a robbery or theft (or even) assault is taking place, but someone with a military or police background has to overcome intensive indoctrination as well.
I'm at a loss as to what part of my military training - firearms proficiency, navigation, how to march in a straight line, etc. - would compel me to pursue someone who had an altercation with an LEO.
Frankly, a service member assigned to a post as a guard had better have a damn good reason for abandoning their post. If I was guarding a bunker and saw some dude punch an MP and then run away, guess what my job is? It's to guard the bunker. This wasn't some life-or-death intervention. First and foremost, the military instills discipline. This guy didn't demonstrate discipline.
That said, I don't think he did anything terrible. (he also displayed a levelheaded response in the end in recognizing that the company's rules were reasonable) Neither did the employer by having those rules. It's also not surprising that the employer has backtracked and is playing damage control due to the silly but predictable "But... but... he's a veteran!" outrage.
Oh, but he's an army veteran, and that makes him deserving of special consideration. Army veterans are not like the rest of us, subject to the ordinary rules and limitations of conduct, and enjoy special privileges. Like, they get to sing the national anthem before ball games.
Yes, especially the ones who aren't roaming mall-land every weekend.
