First Mob Boss killed in the city since 1985.

Hopefully this won't lead to some kind of mob war in NYC.

The unidentified killer fled the scene in a blue car, witnesses said.

New York media say it is the first targeted killing of a mob boss in the city since 1985.

The Gambino operation is said to be one of the five historic Italian-US mafia families in New York.

Wasn't one of the Gambino crime family just telling Cohen to shut or he will get whacked in prison? I do not know if it is related but it would not surprise me, crime family and all. No disrespect to the Gambino's.

The Cosa Nostra has been a shadow of it's former self for several decades now which I am guessing is why you don't hear much about Mafia gang violence anymore. Most former members are in jail, dead, or took over more profitable pursuits. Russian and other ethnic organized crime groups, motorcycle clubs, and street gangs have long taken over there business.
He probably got whacked by some local teenage gang banger, and there's not a thing they can do about it.

Now the mafia as we formally knew them only exists in popular culture (Soprano's, etc).
The below article by the way is over 20 years ago.

NYPD source said the hit was "disrespectful".
