Russian bill to allow it to separate itself from world wide internet

China already has long since done this. But now it looks as if Russia will, too. Getting closer and closer to dropping the Iron Curtain again. With each loss of freedom, more and more educated young Russians leave. How much longer can this go on before Putin closes the gates, to prevent Russians from leaving?

In the US, isn't it the de facto case that "data between users to be rerouted internally"? And users have to trust the authorities and regulators not to influence freedom on the net?

China doesn't seperate itself, it censors the internet via the "great firewall of China" so that certain content is restricted. Facebook, Youtube, Google, certain sites regarding tibet freedom, etc. Censorship is somewhat random and nonsensical. Once on one of my frequent business trips there I could not access CityData forums. They also monitor it (and load spyware on my laptop, but that's another topic). Most Chinese citizens just shake there head and get a VPN to get around it.
Russia may be planning something similiar.
North Korea might be a better example were the internet is shut off to all the population except a few party members. Some that do have access, it's only to the 30 or so websights that N. Korea manages.

No comparison to even China of course, not even close. First of all China routes all global internet traffic through only 2 servers I think, so it's like a funnel that goes through and allows the Chinese regulators to pick and choose the website access it allows. And then we have that "pesky" First Amendment. The government can regulate child pornography, etc...but it's only option of doing so is to regulate if the servers and providers are in the US, and of course the users if perverts are found with this content on their PC. Otherwise for overseas servers they are helpless.

It's not just Russia. Matter of fact they're just playing catchup right now. The former Warsaw Pact countries are prime producers of pornography and have been for awhile. One of the top is said to be Hungary.
Russia is setting up this system for various reasons, one of which is to not be dependant on WESTERN internet infrastructure. They don't want to be cut off, dependence is slavery. We all know that. Security reasons are part of it too.

Pornography is protected free speech, even within the US, and in most countries is not illegal in and of itself. The USA has arbitrarily and unilaterally defined criminal "child pornography" as that which portrays participants who are above the age of consent in virtually every country in the world, including 40 US states.
Russia, among other countries, quite justifiably object to being censored by US nannies. They are seeking immunity from the censorship of Americans, and concern that Americans have unrestricted power to censor worldwide internet traffic to serve America's narrow interests.
Remember that powerful American interests have already brought net neutrality under attack, signalling clearly their contempt for internet fairness of access when it serves corporate interests...

Exactly. And you have to believe it’s another shady way for the oligarchs to make a lot of money.
