Police have asked for the return of $30,000 that fell off the back of a truck in Michigan.

Officers responding to a traffic problem on Thursday came across drivers scrambling to pick up dollar bills strewn across Route 31.

The owner told police he had accidentally left a box carrying the cash on the bumper of his truck.

As of Saturday about $7,000 had been handed in, prompting a grateful message from officers on Facebook.

"Thank you and way to go! We commend you for your honesty!" Grand Haven Department of Public Safety wrote. "The owner of the money will be grateful.

Two 17-year-olds handed in $630 to the authorities, while one woman gave up almost $4,000.

Officers only managed to recover $2,470 from the scene on Thursday after they closed sections of the road to help collect the cash.

"Anyone that picked up money is asked to turn it in at the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety," an appeal said.

If only there was some financial institution available to safely put your money or conduct large transactions instead of in a box on the back of your truck.

How does one "accidently" leave a box of money on the bumper of any vehicle? Or "forget" about it? That box would never have left my hands. It would have been glued to me. Where is common sense these days? Unless the owner has some kind of mental incapacity. In this case someone should have been in charge of him and/or the box of money.

Disclosure: I did not read the linked story, I just read what the OP titled this post and their comments in their post.

Welp...guess he'll never do that again.

Is there the expected GoFundMe page yet??? Since, in today's world no one is responsible for their actions, I'm sure some bleeding hearts will start one.

I can’t imagine any scenario where it would ever be safe or normal to carry that amount of cash.

You would have to ignore every rule about money to make a mistake like that.

I don't always leave $30,000 in cash laying around, but when I do, I drink Dos XX. Stay thirsty.

Where did all this cash come from? Most Normal people keep the money in a bank & use cards to pay. It is the criminal element who keep large amounts of cash on hand.

There are a lot of paranoid people who keep cash.

And people who work off of the books.

Maybe he had the cash for a particular thing and OOPSIE. It's a big oopsie but nonetheless.

Curious......when does "lost" money cease belonging to the person who lost it and become "found" money for the person who found it?
