It is sad, but the reality is that there is no way to keep all of them in good shape.

I was able to go aboard Liberty Ship John W. Brown and Nuclear Merchant Ship Savannah a couple of weeks ago at a Maritime Day celebration. We didn't have time to take the full tour of the John W. Brown, just stayed topside, and we had been through the Savannah before, but it was still cool to go aboard again and get a bottle of water in the lounge. It's really great to see the "Atomic Age" décor that managed to remain in place all this time. Sure wish I could have been a passenger aboard it during its brief operational period.

This might be a stupid question but is there anyway to keep them out of the water?

A dry dock, but is even more expensive. Smaller ships, boats and submarines used as museums are often ashore and not docked in the water.

And, even if they do dry dock them they often aren't taken far from the coast...humid, salty coastal climate will still degrade them on shore. Ask anyone who lives near a beach about corrosion!
