She said she left the dog tied up by a water source. She didn't really explain why. Maybe she thought it would be easier to travel without the dog?
Thanks! I can't imagine leaving my dog behind, but that's just me. Doesn't add up, especially how earlier she ran because the guy w/ a knife threatened to kill the dog, yet now she leaves it to fend on it's own?
Whole thing seems off more and more. Most of the time the family is too distraught to be on FB but both her kids can’t stay off of it.
The only other thing I can think of is she had some sort of dementia episode and literally zoned out and walked off and snapped out of it hours later and was lost. Now that she’s found she’s too embarrassed and doesn’t want to concern her family so she made up this whole guy with knife thing. Plus the dog story has changed several times.
Plus most detectives aren’t going to be out searching caves and mountains and desert trails looking for a burly man with a knife . Either dementia episode or they’re all scammers.

The son has now stated on facebook that everyone will get a refund, and in the future the family will donate to the SAR that searched for his mother, and it's a shame that marginalized populations who go missing don't get the intense media scrutiny that his mother's case garnered.
No more talk about hiring a PI.
I think we can all empathize how difficult this must be to be under intense media scrutiny when a rescue turns out like this.
The latest update to the OC Register article quotes Powell as saying the man pursued her on the first day. Then,
Quote:
"I was only concerned about that for the first day,” she added. “I never saw him again.”
So for three days she was wandering around lost. An experienced hiker in that terrain would not only have a good idea which cardinal direction she ought to be heading in, but would also climb up as high as possible to look for the campground/road. It's rough terrain, but not thickly forested. If you get to a reasonably high point you can get a great view of your surroundings. I wonder if she even tried that.

she said she left the dog by the water source, so that at least the dog would have water. After that, she never found another water source, and said eventually, she could no longer walk due to lack of water and food.
Glad she’s found but I don’t get why they need a gofundme page. Also her story of what happened is quite bizarre like something out of a novel. Where did this guy come from? Her husband was just turning the truck around. They were all right there. I find it hard to believe that her husband wouldn’t have seen her or this guy chasing her even from a distance. How far did she walk away to pee or have her dog potty? Whole story doesn’t make sense. Plus no burly would be rapist is going to tell you that he wants to have his way with you. That’s very old terminology and a creep isn’t going to talk to you. They’ll just knock you down and rape you.
They weren't all right there. She said earlier today, that she'd walked off to check out the terrain while her husband parked the car. This more or less conforms to the original story, of her walking away to find a place to pee. And according to her, it was the peeing that got her in trouble. That guy was watching her, possibly watched her walk from the campground to where he was.
No one has ever mentioned there being another car anywhere in the vicinity. It's a mystery how this guy got there, and how long he'd been there.
I think it would be helpful for people who post new info to cite their sources, so others could see what they have seen.
If you are skeptical of what somebody posts, by all means ask them to provide a source for their information. But you have to be specific. Personally if I'm skeptical, first I do a quick Google search, and see if I can verify the information that way. If I can't, then I ask them to provide their source.

She claimed, though, that she couldn't walk any more at some point. She didn't say when, but it must have been sometime during Day 2 or Day 3 for sure. She said (on the day they found her), that her legs would no longer carry her due to lack of food and water, so she sat down, and did what she could to scoot in something like a seated or half-reclined position. That, also, doesn't make sense in light of what she said about no longer being afraid of the man on Day 2. Why not just stay put, if you can't stand up? Let the searchers find you.
Did she carry her dog for 4 days? Sorry I missed this, but how did the dog get away from her to be found first?
She said she left the dog leashed/tied up at the water source she found. She didn't say why she did that.
The dog apparently did not want to be left behind and somehow got out of being tied up. The dog's barking at that point alerted the people searching on the ground and she was found about 200 yds away from where the dog was found.

Right. The dog's barking was heard by search teams. She saw the helicopters, shemust have known there'd be search teams on the ground, as well. But still she didn't scream or yell "HELP" or anything. Maybe she was afraid the knife guy would find her, if she did?
