They weren't all right there. She said earlier today, that she'd walked off to check out the terrain while her husband parked the car. This more or less conforms to the original story, of her walking away to find a place to pee. And according to her, it was the peeing that got her in trouble. That guy was watching her, possibly watched her walk from the campground to where he was.
No one has ever mentioned there being another car anywhere in the vicinity. It's a mystery how this guy got there, and how long he'd been there.
Yes husband said no other vehicles, but how far did she go off in just a few minutes. Husband mentioned in one story that he was only gone moving the truck about 5 minutes. They were all in the general vicinity at least , or earshot of one another so just find it odd.
I have heard from some friends that hike that there are loner types that live up in these mountains and caves etc. Somehow they get up there and survive. Perhaps she ran into one of them but his verbiage is bizarre and at this point I’m doubtful she ran into anybody. But guess time will tell.
I can get behind this. In an episode of The Bionic Woman, Jamie was able to pick up a rattler and throw it at the bad guy chasing her in the backwoods.
she said she left the dog by the water source, so that at least the dog would have water. After that, she never found another water source, and said eventually, she could no longer walk due to lack of water and food.

The dog apparently did not want to be left behind and somehow got out of being tied up. The dog's barking at that point alerted the people searching on the ground and she was found about 200 yds away from where the dog was found.
Thanks, Ruth & Blondy. Sorry I'm hung up about the dog, but I personally could never leave mine tied, left as possible food for a predator. I'm sure she was tired and even a 5 lb dog gets heavy if carrying. If she didn't feel she was being followed after day one, why not just stop where she was, or stay w/ the dog where she found water.

. OK, now we're getting somewhere. You heard there might be caves up there, or places for someone to find shelter or build a shelter, perhaps. And she found a spring. There might be another small, but little-known spring somewhere beyond that road. I could see some perv who'd been eking out an existence up there in extended solitude saying something gross to a woman he sees with her pants down.
I think LE should investigate. Or if not, it should be posted on all travel websites, and hiking and camping blogs, that there have been unsavory characters encountered up there in the past, dangerous characters.

Thank you for your contributions here.
I can see an unsavory character going up there for a few days but not eking out an existence. The area is very dry most of the year and is considered desert. It's not the Sierras. There is almost nothing to eat unless you can kill the occasional rattlesnake. One doesn't go up there to live in a cave and somehow survive off the land.

OK, but still, it sounds like stories circulate occasionally, about people spending some time up there, however long that time may be. Maybe some people go to places like that, to get away from LE, who knows. But it turns out that Powell isn't the first person to run into a shady type there. That's important to know. It's important for campers to know. And it gives her more credibility.
Loners who go in the mountains to be alone don't come up to a woman with a knife and say the crap the son says that he said. But if he actually did that, I'm pretty sure he could run down a 5'2" 60 year old woman.
But who knows, maybe it's the lamest rapest ever up in them hills.

A 5'2" 60-yr-old woman carrying a dog. She looks awfully spry, though; she looks amazing for 60. Sometimes, the small, spry people can outmaneuver larger, slower people.
She said he dug his fingernails into her wrist or hand, when he first grabbed her. Ugh!
