The nudity thing doesn't bother me. It's fine in Europe. Great-looking, slender people all over the beaches there.

In America, people are offended when what some might call an unattractive person wears shorts and a tank top into a restaurant, others when someone that some might say has the wrong body type wears a romper on a plane. Shameful to have to say this, but probably about half of Americans are not a pleasant sight when nude, and probably more than half of Americans are either jealous or too oversexed to be comfortable around nude or semi-nude slender people.

True. If you're short, fat, and balding you're probably not going to make the cover of "Hot Hunks Weekly"

That's not the issue.

The issue is the people that think they have a right to a visual safe-space where they are shielded from those they do not want to see. It's a demand for conformity, plain and simple. They word revolves around them, by God, and you and I and the rest of the world must attire ourselves for their benefit.

True, but the fix is pretty difficult given how deeply ingrained the socialization against nudity is, and also how deeply ingrained the association of nudity being sexual is. Not sure how that could change.

The quickest and easiest way for that change to come about would be for any woman who feels like going topless to just do it and not give the slightest care to some busybody who objects. Pretty soon the self proclaimed morality police would be worn out from chasing the freedom lovers all over the beach.

I'm surprised that the woman cited by the OP actually succumbed to the pressure and allowed her rights to be abrogated.

Yeah, I was going to say, that idea has been challenged a LOT lately.

For a long time, we women accepted that breasts were for the purpose of pleasing men. Not to feed babies...and if you WERE feeding babies, do it someplace private. Like a stinky nasty bathroom for God's sake!

That's been changing in the last few years, and laws are starting to come around that women can breast feed wherever they darn well feel like.

Now...if we can accept that women should be allowed to breastfeed where and when they want, it CAN'T be a far leap to accept bare breasts at the beach...can it?

Only in America. Haven't these people ever been to a European beach or even Miami?

It's not only in America. Mexico is a very Catholic country, and you have to do some research to find resorts where you can go topless there. Any country with a very heavy religious influence is going to be on the prudish side. Religious groups don't have the political influence in Europe that they do here.

It's not like social mores haven't changed. I mean, women wearing pants - ie, very loose-fitting pants that showed very little - was once pushing the envelope. But people got used to it. Bikinis? Tight-fitting jeans? Not so many decades ago, those were scandalous ideas. Democracy? Interracial marriage? Allowing gays to be out (and not killing them for it)? Those were once perceived as radical, dangerous ideas. (they still are, I suppose, but only by a very small and ever-diminishing number of regressives)

Some people absolutely hate change, and they rail against it. But change comes; generations fade away and new generations come up to take their place - and they wonder what all the fuss was about.

So it ever was, and so it ever will be.
