The owner is a woman. The thief is a woman. My post could have been written more clearly, but I fully understand the situation. The thieves made the car stinky and dirty, but it sure didn’t sound like it would be beyond a professional cleaning.
They were smoking meth, cigarettes and drinking in the vehicle. If they spilled beer and food on the seats, and smoked cigarettes and drugs in the car, professional cleaning would likely require upholstery replacement to get the smells and stains out.
If she kept the debit card on, she would be liable for the charges? Did she report the theft to the police?
I don't see how it was worth it. They probably won't even do serious time.
Yeah, she is not much smarter than the car thief. Now she is out even more money, which she will probably never get restitution for. To say nothing about the two days she wasted tracking down the carjacker.
She should have just cancelled the bank cards, and reported her car stolen to her insurance.
But if you truly want to get your stolen car back, I don't know why you would, but if you do, this is the way to do it. Better than letting the cops do it. Because they don't actually look for stolen cars. They just wait for it to show up in a traffic stop. Which could be months or even years. Then it usually results in a police chase which ends in the car being wrecked with a PIT maneuver.

Well she got her 15 minutes of fame which I suspect was a big motivation for all of this. And she got a little lucky in that the car thieves were complete idiots.
As far as getting the car back, well that is why you have car insurance. You don't have to chase down the car thieves. But it is nice that the good side won and the bad side lost for once.
This woman took a chance I would not recommend. In this day and age, you never know what/who you're dealing with. Personally, I'd report the incident to the police, cancel my credit card, and leave the investigating/seizing of the property to the cops.
Vigilante justice doesn't always turn out well for the victim...
Careful! OJ got something like 30 years for stealing his stuff back.
