So, so, so easy to generalize, a sign of a lazy intellect, to call all of Mexico a hellhole. Obviously, given all the ex-pats in Mexico (40K alone around Lake Chapala) it can be that much of a hellhole. Mexico City is a big island all by itself, you can hardly call it Mexico. And in every Mexican city you'll find healthy slices of America. Drive up the hill from Chapultepec Park in Tijuana sometime and see the mini-mansions shooting up the hills with eye-popping views of the San Diego skyline. Once you suck in that view, you'll want to build a house up on one of those hills.

What family with common-sense is going to be driving at 3am in the morning with a kid that young in areas that have gangs?
His wife probably thought since she was from a nearby area, the gang members would let them pass.
I feel very bad for their son. Perhaps in the future he will seek vengeance.

A similar type of roadblock happened in a resort area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An American software engineer married to a Brazilian had a meeting one afternoon about 100 miles away. He spent the night in the resort area and was shot on his way back approx. 6am-8am by local criminals. They just threw a big tree branch on the road and you have to stop on a two-lane highway. His remains were burned in his charred car. I know this road and wont' go there alone.

What is an advantage for some people in the U.S. is not in other countries. If possible, do not look or act like a gringo and blend in with the locals. Even so, the murdered American was fluent, lived in Rio but maybe his accent and refusal caused his fate. It has only gotten worse since then, not better.

Ok you don't like hellhole, how about "corrupt and dangerous cesspool"? I don't know why anyone would sugar coat a country where journalists and politicians are routinely murdered and dismembered and the average person can't travel from city to city safely. The only "safe" zones for tourists are just that, little islands of relative safety surrounded by a sea of corruption and lawlessness. I guess you can call that something other than a hellhole, but I'm not sure that would be based in reality.

This is misleading, you only posted part of the advisory. Level 2 is only for the areas outside of where higher alerts and DO NOT TRAVEL are advised.

This shooting was in the Level 4 (same as Venezuela) DO NOT TRAVEL state of Guerrero: Do not travel due to crime. Armed groups operate independently of the government in many areas of Guerrero. Members of these groups frequently maintain roadblocks and may use violence towards travelers.

No way, being local she would know that 99% of gang victims are Mexican. He might have fared better without her.

So a man with a family in Utah and one in Mexico is murdered along with his "faith-based" wife in Mexico during the wee hours of the morning.

Is that it?
