There is still a lot of stuff that isn't known by the public yet, and may never be if these young men don't get charged with a crime.

They confessed to having stabbed the man to death.

I don't think they have said anything (not publicly anyway) that they knew he was on on-duty cop, which it does appear he wasn't.
