This may be a sign of real progress. Theoretically, if a woman has access to money, she can flee abuse. However, no word about when or how it will take effect, and it only applies to women 21 or older - so a young woman still cannot flee. But it is a step in the right direction.

What's the world coming to?

Well, as long as they still can't vote, wear pants, swim with men, or own property I supposed we can loosen up a bit. Just make sure she can be tracked with GPS.

I can't imagine living under such strict rules and conditions all these years. It's about DAMN time.

Now if the courts/police would ban burkas and Niqabs worldwide, Muslim women would really feel a lot more independence and individualism once they got used to the idea of not having to hide their faces and bodies.

What ever possessed those women to allow men to set this rule in the first place? They are NOT a man's property. They are living, thinking people, that deserve to be themselves and live without domination by a father, uncle, brother or husband.

Another disgusting practice in the Muslim world that just sickens me is FGM. It is a totally unnecessary and morbid issue of men ruling over women and their bodies.

Turkey, under Ataturk, banned the veil in order to force modernization. The problem is that although some women claim that wearing the veil is their own choice, it is usually done under compulsion - either by government, as in Saudi Arabia and Iran, or by family pressure. More "liberal" families in the West will talk about how to "persuade" their daughters to wear hijab, as opposed to forcing them (which only illustrates that it is NOT the girl's choice), but if it were banned, then there would be no question of families compelling women to veil themselves.

Uhhh, centuries of physical and psychological abuse, including torture and murder?

And secular courts have no place banning burkas and veils, any more than banning vestments, kasaya, kimonos, rosaries, crosses, or any other personal expression of one's religion. I'm pretty sure the First Amendment prohibits US courts from this type of ban.

It wasn't all that long ago that this was the case here in the United States, minus the burkas.

There was a thread not that long ago where women of a certain age recalled not being able to buy a car without their husband's permission, even when it was their own money, or being able to open a credit card in their own name. That was the 1970s, not centuries ago.

And don't forget that up until the late 1970s, rape was forced intercourse by a man with a female not his wife. In other words, if he forced his wife to have sex, it was not rape. Then it became rape if they were separated/no longer living together. FINALLY, it became the law that no one can force sex upon another.

This isn't even fifty years. So before we swoon and get the vapors over those terrible OTHER cultures, we should remember that they are US.

Men are the more violent sex, and generally the stronger one. They can exert more power over women and cause women more harm that women can cause them. And traditionally, women tended to be non-working stay at home wives/moms financially dependent on their husbands; this is still often true in many areas.

It's hard to fight when you can be overpowered, abused, killed, or when you basically have no way out of your situation.
