Good question. Our friend gave her 10 year old daughter a phone. I was at the store and saw a girl that couldn’t have been older than 5 with her mother’s phone. Whatever she was doing she was doing with both thumbs like a pro. They’re using phones younger and younger now.
Most kids of that age I see, have phones, not really surprising to me, like the other poster mentioned, you can tell how good they are at using those phones too!
Since it’s so hard to find a pay phone it’s probably a good idea to have some kind of cell phone.
Exactly.
The whole “when we were kids, we never had nor needed cell phones” argument is a bit silly. Adults didn’t have cell phones either. But there were pay phones everywhere, and there were still countless ways of getting in touch with parents/kids. Times change.

Yes, there were countless times I called home reversing the charges. Kids today have no idea about that LOL, “will you except a collect call from OC NJ girl”? But there was recently a thread about a teenage boy who was lost and couldn’t get anyone to let him use a phone, so I definitely think a 12-year-old having a way to reach parents is perfectly reasonable.
Funny how that aspect of the story is what’s generating attention, and not how easily scammers are getting peoples information and phone numbers. Not just kids who have to worry, my mother would be terrified if she got a spam message such as that. She would not know it was spam. Adults across the country of being victimized by such things. Not to mention the ring and other video cameras that are being spammed now, such as the stranger who hacked into a family’s camera system recently and had a conversation with a 9 year old girl in her bedroom. I can’t begin to imagine how traumatized I would be if that happened!
It's none of anyone's business why other people's kids have cell phones.
It's up to their parents and/or guardians.
