I'm assuming the Coast Guard did not "rescue" the snow mobiles and ATV's?

Yeah well, those people should pay for the cost of their rescue since there was a warning in place to stay off the ice on Lake Erie. This article doesn't mention a fine or rescue fee, but hopefully that'll come. I live in northern Minnesota so I've seen this before like a previous poster, 2x3x29x41, stated about Duluth and Lake Superior.

After warned to "stay off the ice" on Lake Erie, 18 people played on the ice...

When they work the way they're supposed to and the prop isn't trying to break loose and lop off your head, airboats are a blast! (pun intended ). When you're running in hot weather you can create an instant cool shower by reversing throttle and tiller, putting it into a 360 spin, and douse everyone in the boat with propwash. If the water is muddy, oh well. Just close your mouth. You should already be wearing sunglasses/goggles and earplugs/muffs. Those engines are LOUD! The agencies I worked for usually made do with...shall we say...more vintage models powered by modified aircraft engines. The boat's occupants are sitting just a couple of feet in front of those whirling blades. There are protective wire cages around them, but if the prop bolts shear at high RPM, well, you can imagine.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

I pulled this from the article in the OP and am a bit confused. Are they saying if you fall through the ice and can not find the hole you can use a screw driver to break back through the ice? I find that highly unlikely.

The US Coast Guard advises those planning recreational trips to the frozen lake to come properly equipped with ice picks or screwdrivers in case they fall through the ice and need to "self-rescue".

I suspect they meant driving the screwdriver into the ice at the edge of the hole you fell through to gain purchase and pull yourself back onto the surface again. Can't imagine anyone underwater having the presence of mind to chip away at the underside of the ice to break open a new hole.

No, but if you fall into the water, you could use ice picks to pull yourself up onto the ice.
