Several kids have needed liver transplants and some have even died. They can’t figure out what’s causing it but they ruled out all hepatitis viruses, covid, and the covid vaccine. There seems to be some association with adenovirus, but nothing conclusive. The cases are increasing and infecting healthy children.
They think, though not sure, since they saw two independent clusters (one in USA, one in UK) linked to Adv, that it's a normal Adenovirus outbreak however the kids are immuno-naive from being out of school, and social distancing. Now they're getting thrown into schools all at once, and garden variety of viruses are causing severe reactions in some.
Most kids have been back in school since September though, it’s almost the end of the year now.
"This cluster, along with recently identified possible cases in Europe (4–6), suggests that adenovirus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology among children. Clinicians and laboratorians should be aware of possible differences in adenovirus test sensitivity for different specimen types; tests using whole blood might be more sensitive than those using plasma. CDC is monitoring the situation closely to understand the possible cause of illness and identify potential efforts to prevent or mitigate illness. Enhanced surveillance is underway in coordination with jurisdictional public health partners. Clinicians are encouraged to report possible cases of pediatric hepatitis with unknown etiology occurring on or after October 1, 2021, to public health authorities for further investigation."
I don't think it's click bait. Quotes from officials don't sound positive about what the cause is. Adenovirus was found in more than half but not all the affected kids.
"Dr. Jay Butler, the CDC’s deputy director for infectious diseases, said adenovirus was detected in more than half of the children, but researchers have yet to determine the cause of the illness."
“It’s important to note that this is an evolving situation, and we are casting a wide net to help broaden our understanding,” Butler said, adding that the cases were rare. “… We really are casting a broad net and keeping an open mind in terms of whether the adenovirus data may reflect an innocent bystander or whether there may be cofactors that are making the adenovirus infections manifest in a way that’s not been commonly seen before.”
Plus someone said the virus is more active later in winter, but some of the cases go back to fall:
"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the probe Friday, saying there were now 109 known cases of unusual pediatric hepatitis across 24 states and Puerto Rico. The agency said some the cases date back to late October, and all affected children were 10 or younger."

Many people, including kids have been so locked up, gaining weight, etc. maybe our natural immune systems are more vulnerable. Last 6 months I caught a cold (not covid) and it lingered a long time, then I came down with a mild case of shingles even though I got vaxxed for shingles a year ago. I dunno, just a thought.
Well, obviously there are other ways to get Hepatitis though as this shows. And only some of the affected kids had evidence of Adenovirus.
No one is saying you cannot get hepatitis from food. I said that the hepatitis outbreak from contaminated organic strawberries is a different case then the one being discussed in this thread.
The hepatitis A outbreak in 3 states has effected 17 people who bought organic strawberries between between March 5, 2022, and April 25, 2022.
The mysterious hepatitis outbreak being discussed in this thread has effected 109 children in 24 states and has been happening since October.
