I think that's the problem. Also, if they have never left civilization, they might assume that since the animals are there, they must be safe or "somebody" would not have allowed them to be there.
Bet you anything she was trying to get a photo for Facebook. Ten feet. If I saw something that huge, you'd bet your ass I'd stay far away and hope it didn't see me.
I bet it is exactly this. Be interesting to find out just how many people have lost their lives over posting some images to impress.
I still shake my head at how stupid I was swimming up to a lone sea lion. He then came closer to me and bit me in the thigh, causing gangrene. My only defense is I was 18, but still---STUPID. What was I thinking? (I wasn't, apparently!)

I think there's actually a website for this. Stupid selfie deaths or something. Some of them involved standing on the edge of cliffs, IIRC.
When we were at Yellowstone they had billboard signs warning you about the bison. We were at Old Faithful when some bison started to walk around and we left. When we entered the park my husband was driving the motor home and I was behind him in a rental car. A bison started to run down the hill towards the RV so my husband stopped and so did the bison. It lost interest once it wasn’t moving.
Those bison can appear suddenly near you when you are looking in another direction. They are fast for their size and surprised my photographer spouse when he was 50 feet away. He quickly moved to get back in the travel van. It was wrong but I laughed, the way people do when it's almost a very bad thing happening in front of you.

Or a selfie even.....given her age I would not be surprised to hear that.
I'm glad she wasn't killed and hope she makes a full recovery . . . and lesson learned!

She'll learn her lesson, but I doubt many others do. People have no sense when it comes to wild animals.
I saw a man trying to coax a buffalo closer by holding out a banana while his wife, camera in hand, urged him to get closer.
