A mixte or step through bike is best. Easier commuter and as strong a frame for your purposes.
Speed difference is minimal, only noticed at the professional racing level. Carbon vs steel is about 15% faster or 2 mph more, after you hit 15mph. Forgot actual numbers but it is about that from an old bike article comparing new carbon bikes to old steel bikes. No real difference to normal people outside of lifting it up stairs
Pedals and two equal sized wheels are important. Unicycle or an old fashioned style big wheel are too difficult. Otherwise what you need is: "A bike" Don't break the bank to get one. get something cheap. If you like it and get good at it, you will want to trade up as you learn about different types and features.
Mountain Bikes: from REi If you fget into serious moutain biking, you will probably want to step up the game, and get a higher end bike.
If you take care of any of these bikes they will last a long time. Stay away from the crap you buy at Walmart. very cheap components and usually assembled by some unskilled knucklehead making minimum wage.
Depends on how, and where you buy. I don't think I have paid $800 for ten bikes combined, but made a whole lot more than that selling them.
