I have a Q for the adventurers on the forum. I'd like to know what is going on with the flights from Dallas to Mexico City. Why does a flight from Dallas cost $480 when you can get a flight from Houston for $250? Anyone ever get any cheap fares to MEX - are there times of the year or sales that happen? I smell a racket here. Prices from NYC and BOS to MEX are not significantly different than DFW although costs obviously are. I mean it's only a 2 hour flight to MEX! I paid $164 RT to BOS from DFW in July. There are $79 hops from NYC to MIA all the time. Mexico City ought to be the romantic getaway destination of choice down these parts. It is indeed the NYC of the south. I see Aeromexico doesn't even service DFW. I can get the Raddison for $58 per night in MC, but I'm stymied by the airfare. What's up with that?!

OK, I'm done ranting now. Sorry bout that. If you guys have suggestions or have heard of deals, I'd love to know. TIA!

Im afraid it does not quite work that way. Its not a racket at all nor does American have anything to do with it. They dont act any different than any other airline that has a major fortress (Continental Airlines in Houston, Delta in Atlanta, United in Chicago, etc.). Airfare pricing is based off of two things:

1) Availability of seating-fuller flights mean more expensive fares. In the DFW-Mexico market this has been a recent issue because Mexicana went under. Now there are only 5 flights a day between DFW and Mexico City as opposed the usual 8.

2) Advance purchase-Different airlines have different rules. Some tickets require 10 days, 14 days, 7 days, 3 days, or whatever. This varies from airline to airline.

Bear in mind price and distance have nothing at all to do with one another. Mexicana going under is probably why fares have been higher between Dallas and Mexico City.

Aeromexico does fly out of DFW through Worryfreevacations.com - we flew with them this past summer to Cancun. So if you are looking for a tourist beach destination, try the charters for airfare only.
