You are probably going to find more transplants from California, Florida, Chicago in Southlake and more from back East in Park Cities area from what I have heard--
I think the weather will bother you more as a deterrant to walking--my daughter was born in TX and lived in DFW area for almost all her life--moving to FL about 5 yrs ago when she married--
she has come back for visit this week and every time we have gone out and had to walk in the daytime--say after lunch--she has done nothing but complain about the heat--
she lives on Gulf side of FL south of Sarasota--and has become acclimated to the somewhat milder summers there--temps usually stay around 90 and there is breeze...
so weather here--especially summers may be more oppresive--although I know the East is having a bad summer...winters will be better by far--unless you like your snow...

Yes, but if they are planning to put down roots in Dallas, they will probably enjoy the consistency of the Park Cities where there isn't a revolving door of transplant neighbors moving in & out....these are usually the people attracted to the biggest house they can get in Dallas vs "back home" and therefore they pick Southlake/ Frisco/ McKinney/ etc because they don't see the "value" of paying more for a home in the Park Cities that is smaller/ older/ "inferior."
Those who have a longer-term approach and can even picture life after kids graduate in 20 years will enjoy the Park Cities- close proximity to work, schools, AND fun things for mom & dad- with the benefit of neighborhood friendships that can last decades.
This way, they can avoid being like today's other poster who once lived in the city, moved to the burbs for public schools, and is now starting all over again - in their 50's presumably- looking for a new place in-town where the action is. They missed out on 20 years of appreciation in a highly desirable area (like Park Cities, Lakewood, etc). The first cottage my parents bought in 1980 for $80k sold last year (after peak value) for just under $1.0M. I know people whose parents homes in Plano or Richardson (older inner ring suburbs) that have only doubled or so in value in the past 25-30 years- no where near a 12X return!
As my friend's mom says, once a Park Cities resident crosses Northwest Highway, it's all downhill from there (reason being that The Edgemere, a popular upscale retirement community with assisted living option is located at Thackery & Northwest Hwy and then Sparkman-Hillcrest Cemetary is just a few blocks east).

There is lot of professional diaspora in Southlake but with the economy in flux for the last few years many companies were just not doing transfers as they did in the 90s--
many people choose Southlake over the Park Cities/Dallas area because they like the larger lots and newer neighborhoods vs the hodge podge of old home/new home that can be seen going down some of the streets in Highland Park and other areas--they like the consistency of neighborhood construction/standards and the like the larger lots--where you can see a skyline that has some space/sky in it
they like the more relaxed pace and less traffic--although that is increasing it is still not as bad as Dallas is
many people in Southlake have lived there for 10-15-20 years--they consider themselves Texans now even if they originated in another state...
some of them have bought/moved/bought again in Southlake
many people in Southlake actually do anticipate/participate in "the benefit of neighborhood friendships that an last decades ..." as surprising as that seems...
although compared to certain areas of Fort Worth which are the old-money enclaves, Southlake is more nouveau riche but there are also plenty of native Texans from DFW or other cities who have managed to wind up there -- largely because of the consistent real estate resale values and the good schools...and because they are outside the shadows of the Park Cities to certain extent...
Most of the people in Southlake have automobiles and gas money--and they are perfectly capable of driving into Dallas any time they like to see opera at the Winspear, eat at any restaurant they choose, buy season tickets to the Mavericks or the Stars, watch Texas and Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl, and basically do anything that PC person might do--
they don't wear signs on their foreheads that single them out...you could have sat next to people from the dreaded Southlake under almost any circumstances...unless you travel with an entourage of people you know...

Amen! While I like both Southlake and HP/UP and think that there are good reasons to choose either, the traffic in UP is formidable -- narrow, crowded streets (often blocked by construction vehicles and street parking) on the side streets and (much needed) traffic lights every couple hundred yards on the major streets.
I have to travel to HPUMC approximately once a week and every single time I am glad that I don't live in UP and have to contend with the traffic on a daily basis. (And since I attended law school at SMU I know that it isn't just the time that I am traveling or the streets that I am taking that make the drive so miserable.) That isn't the reason our family chose not to live in UP when we moved from the suburbs ten years ago, but it is a factor to consider -- of course since OP is from NYC, the traffic will probably seem mild in comparison.

Yes, I'm aware of that. But being that Southlake is a suburb of Fort Worth in Tarrant County, they have a 30 minute drive home afterwards while those who live close in have a 5-10 minute drive.
If you are someone who runs in the social circuits here and attends a lot of events or is an avid Mavs/ Stars/ symphony etc fan, that can be A LOT of extra late-night driving each week.
Again, it goes back to personal preferences.

Personally, I think if you want to have a more kid-centric lifestyle, where life consists of shuffling kids back and forth from soccer practice, going to parks, and hanging out at the mall/movie theater, I think Southlake is better.
If you want your life to consist of going to Mavs games, museums, opera on a regular basis, want to be part of the "in-crowd", or be a Dallas Socialite, Park Cities would be better.
In terms of attitudes I don't think there's a lot of difference. It takes a lot of pretentiousness to call out another area for being pretentious, however. I have friends in both areas, and both are pretty relaxed.

Southlake isn't diverse, either - I think 96% white was the last figure I heard. Between those two I would choose Park Cities every time ...
If you want a third choice, try my area - more diverse and less materialistic.

definitely UP. it is fairly walkable, you can bike places, and there is a great family involvement. Schools are top notch and it is central to many great places. you wont regret it, pick UP!

Park Cities hands down, while it certainly isn't an urban area it is closer to urban areas and walkable areas than Southlake. Also its about the only place in DFW that has the look and feel architecturally of the suburbs back east.

Less traffic??? You're kidding, right? When I was up there several years ago it seemed like just as much traffic, if not more because the streets are wider.
