Before leaving the UK, just as a warm up you might visit the Texas Embassy Cantina in London. Last I was there, the Manager was from Dallas.
Haha, I've been there! Worst Tex-Mex ever (FYI, parsley is not an appropriate substitute for cilantro), but I appreciated the effort when I was in London and missing home.

Just as an FYI, be aware that you will be doing quite a bit of driving, as the public transportation in Dallas is non-existent in some areas and usually not the best way to go in the areas it does serve (too limited imo). Don't underestimate how long it might take you to get somewhere or how far things are really apart. The Dallas highway system is a tangled web of construction, overpasses, and traffic--I could see it being very overwhelming to someone from the UK, though it isn't impossible.

Have fun on your visit!

Smile Seeing Texas!

Coming to Texas in July will be hot.!! If you get tied of Dallas / FtWorth Area go west on I-20 about 3 hours. There's old Buffalo Gap old western village in Buffalo Gap, TX just south of Abilene,TX. Also go to Perini Steak House on the Perini Ranch at Buffalo Gap which is open on weekends only looks like a old ranch house and bar. Best Steaks! They raise their own beef cattle on the ranch. You can go to the old Grace Hotel now a museum in Abilene plus a new place called Experience Texas! Just northeast of Abilene is the town of Albany with a museum called the Old Jail (the museum is build around an old western rock jail building).

Wow! Thanks so much for all the info...Buffalo Gap sounds right up my street. Driving won't be a problem, my partner does all that, I've not known him to have problems navigating in the usa before (unless he's sleep deprived). He does have a satnav with texas maps on so I'm not envisioning any problems...just as well as I can't map read!

Roll on Wednesday...I can't wait to try out all the suggestions.

."it was a toss up between a new dishwasher or a holiday...we decided holiday." My, oh, my....a dishwasher or a trip to the other side of the world? Dishwashers must be expensive in the UK!!! Sounds like you made a great choice, though.......hope you have a great time! Be sure and buy some sunblock and a billed cap soon as you step off the plane...you don't want to spend your entire holiday nursing a sunburn!

Lol, no not expensive exactly but we felt we deserved a holiday more than a dishwasher, (we had a really lousy end to 2009). We cant wait to get to Texas, its gonna be great. Ive got my sun block and my hat already in my case, im very fair skinned (i burn like crazy), so alls good i will be smothering myself with sunblock regularly. Ive promised my best friend to not get sunburnt as shes getting married not long after we get back and doesnt want me looking like a lobster or a snake shedding its skin at her wedding. Its ok for my partner, he just has to look at the sun and he goes brown!

Thank you again for all the suggestions, we are gonna have a jam packed 10days!
