What makes Dallas shopping so upscale?

Please Please Please no comparisons. I did not post this in the Texas forum for a reason. No arguments, no comparisons with other cities.

I just want to know which stores make Dallas shopping upscale.

Chanel, Neiman Marcus, Jimmy Choo, Barney's, Louis Vuitton and my favorite (at least for browsing), David Yurman... When I read magazines like Vogue and flip through the ads (and Vogue is mostly ads...), some of the upscale stores that advertise there have locations in London, Paris, New York, South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa south of LA, Miami and (drum roll, please) Dallas.

They're not in my price range but I still appreciate that they're here.

From a retailer's perspective, everyone wants to be in the Dallas market. Even when I've traveled abroad, shop owners know that Dallas women love to shop. But the real reason there is so much upscale shopping in Dallas is Stanley Marcus, the son of one of the men who started Neiman Marcus in Dallas around the turn of the last century. Mr. Stanley created excitement in his store and created a NM award for designers that brought the top names in fashion in the 1930's and on to Dallas (a city they had no other reason to visit other than Neiman's). Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Mr. Valentino, Jacques Fath, Elsa Schiaperelli, etc all came to Dallas and were in awe of Neiman's and the Dallas woman's love for fashion.

Fast forward to today, Dallas is the #1 regional shopping destination in the Southwest. Stores come here first. The biggest names in fashion (Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, Zac Posen, Tom Ford, Manolo Blahnik, etc routinely come to Dallas to meet their clients and do trunk shows). The list of stores where Dallas is the only location in Texas or the entire southwest is staggering: Harry Winston, Christian Louboutin (coming fall 2010), Oscar de la Reta, Carolina Herrera, Tod's, Roberto Cavalli, a full line Barneys New York (Houston just has the co-op store), and outposts of top NYC boutiques Scoop and Intermix.

Additionally, there are fabulous boutiques in Dallas owned by locals:
-Forty-five Ten, which is known for cutting edge and slightly avant garde fashions for men, women, & home. Think Alaia, Narciso, Prouenza Scholer, Balenciaga, Dries, etc.
-Stanley Korshak, which is a three-level emporium in the Crescent. Tremendous selection of couture gowns, fabulous jewlrey, made-to-measure men's suits from Kiton and Loro Piano, dibs on most of the city's top bridal gowns from Kenneth Pool, Amsale, Vera Wang, Monique Lieuhillier, etc.
-Elements- sexy lines for women with a European pov (Missoni, Cavalli, etc)
-Carla Martenegro- one of the first shops to carry the revamped Balenciaga line in Dallas. Cutting edge European fashion
-Sebastian's- ladylike clothing from Chloe and Lanvin mixed with sexier Alaia pieces. To die for shoe selection including Louboutin, Lanvin, Choo, etc.

I would just say it's a part of Dallas' culture. We were the first city to have a weekly newspaper section dedicated to fashion (Fashion!Dallas, the defunct Wednesday publication in the Dallas Morning News). We're one of a handul of national malls with $1 Billion in annual sales (NorthPark Center). We have the highest-grossing Neiman Marcus in the chain (NorthPark @ $350M a year).

Lastly, the residents and tourists of Dallas can financially support these upscale stores.
