Love Field upgrade could exceed $1 billion

Love Field upgrade could exceed $1 billion | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Dallas Business News

When it's all said and done, the price tag for rebuilding Dallas Love Field could top $1 billion, officials said Thursday.

That includes the $519 million project now under way to replace Love Field's terminal, $250 million for a hoped-for automatic people mover and the rest for new taxiways, aprons, drainage and other nonterminal improvements.

With extensive work to rebuild the airport's concrete aprons, drainage and other facilities, "it's going to be virtually a brand-new airport from that respect," said program manager Bill Manning of the Love Field Modernization Program.

Diego Rincón, an assistant director of the city's aviation department, said the program to replace Love Field's gates and rebuild its terminal "is just one component" of the program.

Still undecided is how, when and if the airport and city will build an automated people mover to connect Love Field to a planned Dallas Area Rapid Transit light-rail line just west of the airport.

But the city has begun projects to extend one taxiway and is reconstructing another taxiway, he said.

...

"All in all, with all those projects, you're looking at about $1 billion in infrastructure that are being planned at this airport over the next five to six years," he said.

"This is a very exciting project, one of the most exciting projects in the United States today," he said.

Definitely an improvement from the current facility. I can't wait for the remaining Wright restrictions to be lifted so we can fly Southwest directly to more destinations.

In the mean time...can they also revitalize the entrance to Love Field. All those businesses along Mockingbird look right down nasty. That flea motel, all the car rental companies, that disgusting Burger King, the mexican resturant.

I drive the route everyday and cant understand why this area is so run down.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting. The layout of the new terminal is very similar to that of Hobby Airport in Houston. I'm wondering if & how they are planning to connect the airport to the new DART rail station that is on the west side of the airport near SW HQ. Anyone know?

There are plans for an underground people mover from Burbank Station to the new terminal; they just have to find the $250 million for it (you can kind of see an outline of the route on the site plan and a sign for "Automated People Mover" in the renderings). Until then, Inwood/Love Field Station will have a shuttle bus.

Wow, those renderings look really nice! Love Field will undoubtedly be one of the best airports of it's size in the nation after these improvements are completed.

I'm surprised the new terminal will be 25% smaller in size than the current one. It looks to be a more efficient use of the space, though.
