My husband was relocated to the Dallas area, so we are in search of the best town for us. We are moving from MA and have zero idea about Texas and what neighborhoods are best. We are in our early 30's, no children and enjoy a little nightlife. We have done a limited search in McKinney and Frisco - are those good choices? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated it. Thanks!

Dallas is hugh and traffic is a nightmare. So where you work should be a compelling factor in your search. You should rent before buying. If you ever plan on having kids, you should think about schools before buying. The northern 'burbs - Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Allen, etc. ad nauseum -- are loaded with McMansions, highly rated schools, and tons of malls and chain restaurants. Those 'burbs are a mecca for soccer moms. But they are also very convenient and have many gorgeous pocket neighborhoods. Most younger professionals who like nightlife enjoy living in the Uptown area in the city of Dallas. Addison is also popular for nightlife. In Dallas, the "M" street and Lakewood areas are expensive but very desirable locations. The Las Colinas & Valley Ranch areas are also popular with professionals who want to be near "the action." Research past threads on this forum. Your question is asked several times a week and there are many responses.

Why don't you live in Dallas if your husband is being transferred to Dallas? Do you know the location of his workplace? It's an awful drive from McKinney to Dallas; heck I think it's an awful drive even on the weekends - the suburbs seem to have more traffic than the actual city.

As mentioned, Uptown area, Lakewood (East Dallas area), M-Streets, Addison, North Oak Cliff (Bishop Arts) are where most childless couples live in your age range who like easy access to nightlife.

But...if you are just looking for an occassional sports bar for nightlife, Frisco and McKinney would be fine. It's highly kid-centric, though.

If you are kid-free and enjoy going out, those are the last two places I would choose.

I do not know what your budget is but I would advise you to check out Uptown, Lakewood, or The Village. Even Addison or Richardson would probably be better bets; Addison if you want to rent, Richardson if you want to own.

Need to know job location. McKinney and Frisco are full of families - very child centered - so nightlife is not a priority.

I would rent in Dallas Proper first. If the job is at Plano Legacy (lots of corporations out there) then that is far out and McKinney and Frisco make sense - except for the fact they are full of families.

There is some nightlife at Shops at Legacy - plus rentals.

Actually, the commute (in minutes) is about the same from Uptown Dallas to Legacy as is from west & north Frisco or Central/North/East McKinney. A lot of the streets coming from subdivisions to 121/Tollroad are 1-lane roads with lots of stop signs and lights. Can easily take 15-20 minutes just to get from your driveway to the highway to start your "easy" 5-10 minute commute.

If you are interested in nightlife (live music, bars, and restaurants) and don't think eating dinner at a Cheesecake Factory inside a mall is a great date night, keep your search to Addison/ Richardson/ and Dallas. Look south of Beltline Road all the way to downtown Dallas. Areas between Central/76 and Tollroad are most centrally located (and also most expensive) to office districts. Other neighborhoods previously mentioned (Lakewood, North Oak Cliff, etc) are great places but not convenient to all job centers.

Need to know- where is job? What is housing budget?

If you have not spent any time in Dallas, highly recommend you rent for 6 - 12 months first before buying.

No. They are not good choices. Unlike many northeastern cities, Dallas proper has many safe suburban neighborhoods with good schools. Those neighborhoods have homes with character, tall trees and distinct personalities all their own. They also contain unique shops, restaurants and nightlife. For the most part, these are all things that the Collin County suburbs/exurbs sorely lack (except for safety and good schools).

When people complain about "Dallas" not having any unique stores, restaurants or homes, they often really complaining about the Collin County suburbs. Collin County nightlife would be as wild as Applebees or the Cheesecake Factory -- for your anniversary.

North Dallas, south of I-635, in between the Dallas North Tollway and US/75 Central Expressway is the most desirable area of town. Those areas include North Dallas, Preston Hollow, Park Cities and Uptown neighborhoods, among others. The East Dallas neighborhoods of the M-Streets, Knox-Henderson and Lakewood are also highly desirable and include the more "liberal" part of the city that looks with disdain on any chain stores and has homes and mansions from built between 1890-1950.

Downtown, Uptown and Knox-Henderson have the best nightlife in the city.

McKinney is farther from Dallas than Fort Worth.

Look at Knox-Henderson, Uptown, East Dallas and Lakewood - all very compatible with your desires and more MA than the the treeless tundra up north. OK McKinney does have some trees and a small-town courthouse square and houses - but remember how far out it is...
