Like stated the Fair Park grounds themselves are safe but the area around it is not. Like stated good vs bad could be a block away so make sure you the see the apartment or duplex in person before committing to anything. You have been given some very good advice here.

crime reports

Select neighborhood | EveryBlock Dallas (http://dallas.everyblock.com/crime-reports/filter/locations/neighborhoods/ - broken link)

by zip-code

Select ZIP Code | EveryBlock Dallas (http://dallas.everyblock.com/crime-reports/filter/locations/zipcodes/ - broken link)

on the main page you can also search by block radius.

the neighborhoods are off or completely wrong for some areas, so zip or block is a better search to use.

I would say the areas on the west (Expo Park) at the main gate and the area to the north (Jubilee Park) to to a lesser degree are fairly safe. The bad area is 'behind' or east of Fair Park over to Lagow, Hatcher and Lincoln. I personally don't have a problem going to the MLK Boulevard area - South Blvd and Park Row -- although it might freak out some white people.
