When I heard about this, I just could not believe it:

Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson violated rules, steered scholarships to relatives | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Latest News

This is supposed to be a smart woman who should know better. In the article, she exclaims that her granchildren are not "immediate family". Her scholarships were not publicized to those in her district. None of the recipients who were related actually lived in the congressional district. One of her grandsons received a scholarship EVERY year.
Why does she continue to be re-elected?

I saw the story on tv the other night. Very shameful. And she acts like she did nothing wrong. At least they say she's paying back the money. Oh boy!

I have met her and she is a really nice person. Having said this it would take a complete moron to believe her story. I'm glad she paid he money back but does she really think people are so gullible.

first of all--consider who her constituants are--
most of them are not reading the paper or watching the news...
they are the ones who vote for her--
I think she had done things with positive impact in her district--call it pork barrel or taking care of your own--it makes for re-electability--and anyone who knows ANYTHING about politics knows that it is not a Democratic or Republican trait or AA/Hispanic/Ethnic trait--
anyone who is elected and DOES NOT bring money/projects back to his/her district/state is not going to be re-elected period...

It was stupid--easy to discover--and for the amount of money used--will cause so much more damage than it was worth--
frankly it shows that she has little impulse control--
there are probably other ways to get the same type of "help" accomplished for if you are a more powerful political person--just shows that she really does not have a lot of clout...

and it might be that someone in her "inner circle" gave her the idea as a "graduation" gift type of thing--vs an appointment to a military academy--which undeniably puts more burden on the part of the student who would have to have the grades, the physical/mental stamina, and the desire to persue such an appointment...

I don't approve of what she did--but it really just shows that she is not that capable...

I live in her congressional district and DO read and follow the news. Sure her district covers some of the poorest areas of Dallas, but it also includes areas with sizable numbers of middle-class, informed, and college educated residents as well. I have nothing against her as a person, but this whole matter is a mess and it is shameful. She did the right thing by paying the money back, but she has definitely lost credibility with some of her constituents, myself included. Despite this, it is likely that she will be re-elected for another term. Even though I have supported her in the past, I will not vote for her or any of her minor opponents in this particular race.

Corrupt politicians come in all races and from both parties. I think being corrupt is a requirement to serve in DC.
