Hello Everyone...

I received word today that my transfer to Dallas from Miami, Florida was approved. They would like me out there by Aug.2. That leaves me very little time to get everything together. My job will be located in the Uptown/N. Dallas area (sorry if that's vague, but I'm not familiar yet). As I said, I have never been to Dallas, and am not at all familiar on what area would suit me best, however I do feel that I need to take this position at this point.

A little background about me: I am 28 years old; not children or spouse. I have lived in Miami, Florida since I was 10, so this will be a big change for me. I do have 2 dogs (Boxers), but I can leave them here with my family for as long as I need to, but Ideally I would like to bring them up as soon as possible, as I will surely need the company. However, from my limited research, I see that the 2 dogs may present a big hurdle in my search with such limited time.

Based on my financial situation, I can afford to pay no more than $900 rent. I know it would be wishful thinking to find a 1 bedroom house for that kind of money, but that would be great, lol. If not, I realize that since I don't have much time to decide, I may have to just move into an apartment or condo, until i can get settled, and then look for a home and send for the dogs later. I would rather not, but I am not sure what to do.

Basically, any help that you guys can give me would be much appreciated. Even if it's not about what I discussed, but anything you feel may be useful to my move would be great. Thanks in advance...

Welcome to Dallas! First of all, it's a city of transplants - so don't worry about fitting in and all that. That's great that your work is in Uptown/N. Dallas - that's one of the nicest areas of town. You can definitely find a 1-bedroom, dog friendly apartment complex in Uptown for that price. That's what I would recommend - Uptown has a ton of bars/restaurants, walking distance kind of stuff.

You might also find a duplex or very small single family home in Lakewood area or East Dallas with a yard for dogs. Check dallasnews, craigslist and the dallasobserver.

Welcome to Big D.

Drew,

Thank you so much...I only began my search today, but from what I can tell that area seems like a good fit for a guy in his late 20's. Not to mention the advantages of being close to work. I realize the dog thing (there are 2 of them and boxers aren't the smallest) makes it harder.

Thanks again, and hopefully everyone there is as nice. Down here, the courtesy can be lacking sometimes, lol.

Lakewooder,

Thanks for the response. Is that area far from the uptown area? Also are those areas relatively safe? Again, I am going into this situation pretty blindly.

And to clarify more about the dogs, they are fine inside the house, it's not like I need a big yard or anything, but of course that would be ideal. But at this point, I can't be extremely choosy.

It's just east of Central Expressway - 75 - 5-10 minutes from Uptown/Downtown and close to lots of things you would like - Knox/Henderson, Lower Greenville, White Rock Lake etc.

You could look at apartmentratings.com and put in a zip code and it'll show you the nearest apartments within a certain mile radius. Then you can check out the places on apartments.com, rentmoney.com etc.

It is a good fit. I mean, I am 27 and not from here at all, but it's nice. Both Lakewood and Uptown are very nice - Uptown is a little more urban is all. I think apartments.com has a good breakdown of what is priced what where, and if you type in $900 as your ceiling, you will still get some nice stuff - in both areas. Lakewood would be referred to as East Dallas, while Uptown is referred to as Uptown/Downtown.

thanks so much...

so what I am getting is that I should gear my search towards an apt closer to work/uptown, rather than a home, that may be farther o in a more questionable area. Is this more or less correct?
