Question about streets around Lakewood elementary.we are looking into a property near the school but have concerns about noise and traffic in Vanderbilt, Sondra, oakhurst. How bad is traffic in school days and how crowded does it get? Does being near the area become a negative?

I think it would only be bad two times a day - drop off and pickup. I have friends with kids at Lakewood and they have never complained about carpool taking too long. I think Sondra is a pretty busy cut-through street, but I still see lots of kids playing in their front yards so it probably isn't too bad.

Good luck.

That is one ares where being walking distance to the school is a PLUS when buying (for families, at least). The way the school is positioned (on a n/s running street in a neighborhood where the residential streets run e/w) makes traffic even less of a big deal.

Little if any traffic anywhere in Lakewood (east of Abrams). I did get stuck once on Lake Circle this year but it was the last day of school and everyone was just parking to walk up there for the festivities.

The traffic pattern going back to the 60s is that you go Lake Circle to the school then disperse mostly to the north and east to Wendover but some go back west on Sondra - a few on Vanderbilt. Then again a lot of people pick up their kids behind the school on Wendover.

Many moms have been frustrated over the years that when they go to pick up their kids they are down in the creek behind the school (perfectly innocent - I used to get a gander of the Stanley Marcus Estate sometimes). That led to making it the Lakewood Outdoor Learning Area (LOLA) with a lot of improvements.

I think being close to the school is a plus - many times I would walk home past the little private lake with a good friend who lived on Vickery and my mother would pick me up later. I didn't dream back then that I would someday be living on the next street south, Westlake. My sister would often walk home with a friend who lived on Carolyncrest.
