I'm likely moving my family later this year, and have really honed in on DFW due to the plentiful jobs and awesome home prices (I know the property taxes are high). Then, I see this report of a guy being killed by those africanized bees not too far from this region. Are those things a serious threat in the DFW area as well? I have 4 little kids, and that scares the hell out of me. I went to middle and high school in the Houston area back in the 80's and don't remember dealing with anything of this nature.

Africanized bees have been in the States for many years, and covered a lot of ground beyond Texas Spread of Africanized Honey Bees in the United States, and even spawned a movie (The Swarm), and what's the percentage of the nearly 7 million people in DFW who've been killed by them? This man's death (which was down near Waco, not in Dallas) was tragic but of all the things to worry about when moving to Texas, this is not one of them. If you're not careful, chances are a sunstroke in August or the occasional patch of black ice in February is going to take you out before the bees will.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone in DFW being attacked by KB's.

Yeah, Killer Bees have been around for a while now. I hear they've made it as far north as New York:

Another thing blown out of proportion by the Cult of the Apocalypse.

Many people die each year from anaphylactic shock due to normal stings than have ever died from KBs.

This is the .50 caliber ant aka the cow killer ant. It has the worst sting of any of the bugs in Texas. It hurts so bad that you will have to sit down and cry.

Flightless_Wasp

Paper wasps are the most common in urban areas. Kids typically get nailed by them when they swing something and hit a plant that has a nest in it. Easy to control if you have a can of wasp spray.

And then there is the fire ant. Easy to control. But the bite will hurt.

I've been stung by a wasp a few times while cutting the grass. I just passed by their honey comb nest that was on the underside of my fence that I just passed by then I got stung multiple times while trying to run away. You need to use a wasp killer to get them gone. Needless to say, it wasn't deadly. I think people allergic to bee stings will suffer more if they get stung by a wasp.

It has happened before IIRC, but it's pretty rare. Any death by an insect sting is rare. I have a potentially fatal allergy to wasp stings but I'm still here.

Africanized Bees? It's been a long time since I thought about those critters. Anyhow, I'm not entirely sure if they was Africanized bees but we had a very aggressive bee hive on a mountain bike trail out in Garland. People received multiple bee stings as soon as they got near a certain point on the trail. They've since been removed and haven't seen any since.

Anyways, I would worry more about Mosquitoes and the West Nile Virus than bees. We see more people infected by WNV each year in Dallas than you hear about Africanized bees world wide.

These are the ones that are scary looking to me, though I hear they don't harm humans.
