1. Tons of threads on both areas. Start with a forum search.
2. Need way more detailed info to give you appropriate info:
Home budget/ size & age of home desired
Age/grades of kids
Where your job(s) are and commute tolerance (max minutes)
Your personal preference of suburb vs living in the city

Quite frankly, these two areas are so incredibly different (East Dallas vs northwest of Dallas, suburban school district vs one part of huge DISD, mostly older homes from the 1910's-1950's to mostly homes less than 10 or 20 years old, etc), I don't even know how you could narrow a DFW search down to those two and not have an easy decision based on your own family's lifestyle.

Where are you going to work? They are about 45 miles apart.

And how much do you want to spend on a house?

They are so far apart and so different in general.

Flower Mound is suburban with a very homogenous population.
Lakewood is in-town and diverse with history and character.

FND is correct. They are very different. As are previous posters.

Flower Mound has an excellent school district, and new infrastructure, but is going to lack the quirkiness and character that Lakewood has. And is going thru a certain amount of growing pains exacerbated by politics surrounding oil drilling.

Lakewood has an incredible charm to it, and good schools, but comes with the nightmare at large that is DISD (and that your taxes go to not just your local school) as well as a relatively high property tax rate that is managed by a group that is so dysfunctional that they can't agree where to order lunch.

I find Lakewood very appealing but it's not for me overall. Especially with our jobs not being in Dallas. However, suburban life isn't for everyone and we have friends that absolutely love their Lakewood home, neighborhood and schools.

In that case, I would check out Flower Mound. You will get a lot more house for $200K - $250K there than you will in Lakewood, and the schools are solid all the way from elementary to high school.
