We are moving from West Palm Beach, FL for a job in Grapevine, and are looking to rent a 3/2/2 house for under $1,500. No kids, one dog and one cat, and we want to be within 30 minutes of the airport (for the job) and near shopping, yoga classes, and parks. Lewisville seems to be more affordable than Grapevine or Flower Mound but is it safe? We need a nice enough area but need to keep the costs down since I won't be working right away and we want to save for a house. Appreciate any input out there!

Lots of traffic bottlenecks from Lewisville sometimes; traffic patterns are ok on the tollways but not generally the highways between Lewisville and Grapevine. Similar issues with Flower Mound. You should look in Grapevine -- tho it may be difficult at that price -- Euless, Bedford. Also Irving is close, also North Grand Prairie is not terribly far for airport and Grapevine. There are many, many location snobs on this forum so you will get many opinions. Many will point you to more pricey areas that are simply more pricey because the schools are highly rated. But that's not an issue for you. Very few areas I would call unsafe and pretty much shopping is best in Grapevine but really there's good shopping everywhere.

Any of the three area will work. Lewisville will be the cheapest, but also the least nice.

Flower Mound will be the most expensive, but the nicest.

I would concentrate on the Grapevine. It will be in the middle, cost wise. It's close to the airport, and nice shopping is close by in Southlake.

This is a great location in Euless! 402 Lone Oak Circle Euless TX - House for Rent - MLS #11516794 - Realtor.com®

There are lots of choices in your price range right in Grapevine; you will save yourself SOOOO much pain if you rent there. Traffic is really terrible in the DFW area!

DH and I have lived in Grapevine for 8 years now and we LOVE it here! We also have no kids. PM me for the name of the landlord we rented from. They are pet friendly!

You do NOT want to be on Texas Street or in that area. This is not the good part of Grapevine, and if you go read the police blotter, that area gets a LOT of calls. See if you can find a house in the Bellaire neighborhood (behind the Police station). We lived there for 6 years and absolutely loved it. Great neighbors and a super convenient location! Also, out by the lake is a good part of town. Anything near Dove Road or Dove Loop is good.

Lewisville is mixed. There are good parts and also bad parts. Traffic from Lewisville to DFW Airport is a mess right now with the road construction, and it is also very heavy anyway.

Euless is OK as long as you are north of 183. South Euless can be pretty rough. Stay AWAY from anything near Industrial!

North Grand Prairie to Grapevine is a long commute with heavy traffic, and NGP is not the best part of that city. (South GP is much better, but it is a lot longer commute.)

You don't want to be stuck in Flower Mound unless you have kids. It is a great place for families, but you will be bored there if you're not part of the family scene. It is all about soccer games and school plays up there...

I agree. If you look in Lewisville, generally stay west of I-35 and you will be fine. There isn't much to rent in Flower Mound

Thanks Squirl - I saw that Grapevine listing and am trying to get more info to check availability. We need to schedule a trip to check out neighborhoods and make a choice. Mostly I want to make sure my husband doesn't have to deal with outrageous traffice, and maybe be near walking paths.

Default Thanks

Thanks everyone for the advice, and keep it coming. We really just need to schedule a trip soon to look around. Mostly I want to get my husband close enough to the north of the the airport (where the job is), and possibly have a park/walking paths nearby, plus access to shopping and maybe even a yoga studio - not too much to ask is it?

You should try The Colony, also. Quick commute to the north side of the airport.

Moved to Grapevine earlier in 2010 from New York. Chose it because we thought the traffic would be too bad coming from Dallas to the airport. Grapevine isn't bad. if you live close to downtown its actually somewhat walkable. There are plans to connect it via the TRE in 2014 so there will be a public transit option to Dallas and Fort Worth. I would not live anywhere else in the mid-cities, except maybe in Southlake Town Center if I could afford it, but the commute to DFW or Dallas downtown is much easier from Grapevine. The other places are boring, suburban and depressing. I'm not sure about the quality of the residential environment, but Irving near the airport seems to have the best dining options (at least in terms of not having to eat at chains and providing variety).
