My wife and I are expecting our first child and will be moving to Dallas. I was wondering how much are we looking at paying for child care for an infant? And does anyone know of any good daycares around downtown Dallas?

I have noticed a new daycare on the corner of Canton and Hall in Deep Ellum. I don't know the name of it...sorry. But the building has been painted yellow with red trim - it's easy to spot!!

Default Subsidized Day Care

My daughter just started her Texas teaching certification course. She has her 4 year degree in Elementary Ed from Minnesota. She will have to go to several Dallas area schools, some up to 1 hour commute from home. She does this willingly knowing that she will one day settle into 1 school district and her pay will finally match her education level.

In the meantime, she needs to find daycare that she can afford in Coppell or nearby. She has looked and has found nothing she can afford.

Is there an affordable day care plan in the area? She will be going in all directions to many schools. We wish the local school districts had day care available to teacher moms.

The better day cares in Dallas tend to be run through churches. You do not have to be a member in most cases, but there are generally wait lists.

First United Methodist Church (Downtown Dallas)
$825/mo for infants
First United Methodist Church - Dallas

First Presbyterian Church (Downtown Dallas)
$1,056/mo for infants
Welcome to First Presbyterian Church of Dallas: FPC Developmental Day School

Oak Lawn United Methodist Church (about 2 miles north of downtown)
$1,058/mo for infants

What is considered affordable?

I am fairly certain that if your daughter quailifes as low-income, she would be eligible for child-care assistance. You would need to check with the Texas Workforce Commission to verify what the low-income threshold would be.

Good luck.

Check churches for daycares as they are non-profit. They are usually cheaper than the for-profit chain daycares.

You might check out and see if you can find someone who does childcare out of their home or a student who will come to you. It's hit and miss, but if you find someone you can trust, your child will get a lot more personal attention. I know several grad students who do this for families in the Park Cities.

One thing you should know is that there is a long waiting list for daycares downtown. You should check them out on the state agency database too.
