He was looking around Walnut Road between Jupiter Rd. and Plano Rd. - I don't know if that's Garland, Richardson or Dallas right there.

There are plenty of apartments in the $400 range in Carrollton. I used to live in that area. For example City Limits apartments (my brother used to live there 10 years ago) is running a special for $399 a month. Granted, they are very small. But it's on a bus line and lots of restaurants, offices, hotels nearby.
I used the apartmentguide.com to look these up.
When you do find something in Carrollton or North Dallas (the areas I am most familiar with) you can send me a message and I'll tell you if that's a good area or not.

PS. I used to live here and I loved it!

I had a relative living there a couple of years ago in a really cheap apartment. Didn't seem too bad to me, just a strange area -- like you said, no focus.

To me some place around Oak Lawn, Henderson or Gaston in an older cheap apartment would be a lot more interesting..of course it would take a lot of looking to find the right place.

If you're budgeting $450/mo for rent, you can expect to live in the Dallas equivelent of East New York (the sketchy, crime-ridden hood).
A friend just rented a nice one bedroom for $600 right at Knox Henderson. Can walk to Chuey's, Noche de Luna, Crate & Barrell, etc. That's a fine neighborhood.

If you are young ad don't want to live in a suburb of families like Carrollton, think near downtown/East Dallas. but I would look to 7-800 for a decent place.

You could get a dump for 500 somewhere, but why when you could have a nice new apartment with a pool.

I'm new to the iPhone but I downloaded realtor.com app and it will show you places for lease around the location of your phone. I was at home (Junius Heights - East Dallas) last night and I was suprised how many places came up in the $500-$650 range. I know this area like the back of my hand and I can tell you that some of them are really pretty decent for that price. I'm sure you could find a lot more on craigslist from independent landlords who don't list their properties with a Realtor.

you are probably going to need a car if you can't get place right on the bus line with good commute--and since you don't have a job you don't really know where that commute might be yet

agree that TX workforce site is good place to start with job listing since most of those ARE real jobs vs some that are just trolling for responders

Well, that restaurant isn't even in the Knox-Henderson area (it's at NorthPark), but I see what you're saying. Yes, there are some older run-down apartments on McKinney that back up to 75, but most people would pass on them due to the condition they're in and the noise from the highway.
